Wine aperitif — What is it?

A wine aperitif, often simply called an “aperitif,” is an alcoholic drink enjoyed before a meal to stimulate the appetite and prepare the palate for the food to come. Aperitifs can include a variety of beverages such as wine, spirits or liqueurs, often diluted with water, soda or other mixers.

A wine aperitif is specifically an aperitif made with a wine base. It can be dry or sweet and feature a wide range of flavours and taste profiles depending on the wine varieties used and the added ingredients.

Popular examples of wine aperitifs include:

1. Vermouth: An aromatised and spiced wine often infused with herbs, spices and bitters. Vermouth comes in various styles, including dry (bianco) and sweet (rosso).

2. Lillet: A French wine aperitif made from a blend of wines and citrus liqueurs. It’s known for its fruity and refreshing taste.

3. Kir: A French aperitif made with Crème de Cassis (blackcurrant liqueur) and white wine. It has a sweet and fruity character.

4. Spritz: An Italian aperitif made with Prosecco, a splash of soda water and a bitter liqueur such as Aperol or Campari. It’s known for its light and refreshing nature.

Wine aperitifs are often served before a meal as an aperitif and can also be used as an ingredient in cocktails. They offer a popular way to refresh the palate and whet the appetite before diving into the main course.
