Genever – What is it?

Genever, also known as Dutch Gin or Jenever, is a traditional spirit from the Netherlands and Belgium. It is a juniper schnapps made from grain distillate and often has a spicy, sometimes malty note. Unlike London Dry Gin, which is made by distilling neutral spirit with juniper and other botanicals, Genever is distilled from a blend of grain alcohol and a percentage of malt wine. This gives it a distinctive flavor and a slightly oily texture. Genever is often enjoyed neat or used in Cocktails, particularly in classic drinks like the Holland Gin Cocktail.
