Scotch Blended Whisky – what is it?
Scotch Blended Whisky is a type of Scotch whisky produced by blending two or more different types of whisky. There are two main categories of Scotch Blended Whisky:
1. Blended Scotch Whisky: This type of whisky is a blend of Single Malt Scotch Whisky and Grain Whisky. Single Malt Scotch Whisky is made exclusively from malted barley in a single distillery, while Grain Whisky is distilled from other grains such as corn, wheat, or barley. The combination of Single Malt and Grain Whisky creates a versatile and balanced Blended Scotch Whisky with a broad spectrum of flavors.
2. Blended Malt Scotch Whisky: This whisky is a blend of various Single Malt Scotch Whiskies from different distilleries. Unlike Blended Scotch Whisky, Blended Malt Scotch Whisky contains no Grain Whisky. This allows for a diversity of flavors and characters derived from the different Single Malts.
Blended Scotch Whisky is often lighter and more approachable than Single Malt Scotch Whisky and is commonly enjoyed neat or used in cocktails. It is also a popular choice for everyday whisky enjoyment. Some well-known brands of Scotch Blended Whisky include Johnnie Walker, Chivas Regal, and Dewar’s.
