The Zombi is a fruity cocktail from the Tiki era, made with dark Rum, Triple Sec and a mix of orange, pineapple and lemon juice. Grenadine provides the typical color and a subtle sweetness. The name refers to its effect: drinking several can leave you moving like the undead. Many bars once had a rule of serving a maximum of two per guest.

Here’s what you need for the Zombi

6 cl dark Rum

2 cl Triple Sec

2 cl Grenadine

2 cl lemon juice

5 cl orange juice

5 cl pineapple juice

1 slice of pineapple for garnish

1 cocktail cherry for garnish

What matters

The juices must be fresh; otherwise, the Zombi tastes like juice from a carton with alcohol. I squeeze the orange and lemon fresh right before mixing. You can buy pineapple juice in a pinch, but choose one without added sugar. For the Rum, I go for a bold brown with a distinct molasses note—it cuts through the juices. If you prefer a more authentic taste, mix two Rum varieties: light and dark. This makes the drink more complex, but it’s not mandatory.

Variations

  • Zombie (Original recipe) — The historic recipe uses three different Rum types, Falernum, Pernod and Angostura Bitters—significantly more complex and drier than the simplified version.
  • Zombi with passion fruit — Swap 2 cl of pineapple juice for passion fruit juice to give the drink a more exotic note.

Frequently asked questions

Which Rum should I use for the Zombi?

Use a dark Rum with a bold flavor that stands up to the juices. Caribbean brown Rum with a molasses note works well. Avoid Rums that are too mild or too smoky.

Can I make the Zombi without Triple Sec?

Yes, you can substitute Cointreau or another orange liqueur. Without it, the drink becomes more acidic and less smooth.

Why is the cocktail called Zombi?

The name refers to its strong effect: the high Rum content is masked by the juices, and the alcohol isn’t noticeable until later. Many Tiki bars once had a two-drink limit.

Do I have to use all three juices?

Yes, the combination of lemon, orange and pineapple creates the signature flavor. If you omit one, the balance between acidity, sweetness and fruitiness is lost.
