Pussy Foot – alcohol-free – the recipe Rezept

Basisspirituose
Alkoholfreie Cocktails (Mocktails)

A mocktail that doesn’t need to hide: the Pussy Foot brings together the tropical freshness of pineapple, orange and grapefruit, underscored by the sweet depth of grenadine. Originally created as an alcohol-free version of the eponymous cocktail, it is now a standalone thirst quencher – perfect for anyone who wants fruity flavour without alcohol. The physalis garnish not only adds colour to the drink but also a slightly tart note that rounds off the flavour.

And this is what you need for the Pussy Foot – alcohol-free

2 cl grenadine

6 cl freshly squeezed orange juice

6 cl freshly squeezed grapefruit juice (pink or white)

6 cl pineapple juice (freshly pressed or high-quality store-bought, unsweetened)

1 physalis (as garnish)

1 splash of lemon juice (optional, for extra acidity)

What matters

The trick is in layering the juices: the grenadine gives the drink sweetness and colour, but it shouldn’t dominate. Add it last to the shaker so it doesn’t immediately mix with the other juices. A short but vigorous shake is all you need – shaking for too long makes the drink too watery. If you use fresh pineapple, juice it yourself: the juice loses aroma quickly once exposed to air. A splash of lemon juice just before serving can help bring out the fruit notes without overpowering the flavour.

Variations

  • Pussy Foot with ginger — Replace the grenadine with 1.5 cl ginger syrup and add 1 cl lime juice. The ginger adds a sharp note that pairs perfectly with the citrus fruits. Garnish with a thin slice of fresh ginger or a lime slice.
  • Pussy Foot with basil — Add 3 fresh basil leaves, which you lightly press in the shaker before shaking to release the aroma. The herbal note surprisingly complements the sweetness of the grenadine and the acidity of the citrus fruits. Garnish with a basil leaf.
  • Pussy Foot with coconut — Replace 2 cl of the pineapple juice with 2 cl coconut milk or coconut syrup. The drink becomes creamier and acquires a tropical depth. Garnish with a pineapple slice or coconut flakes.

Frequently asked questions

Can I substitute the juices with ready-made mixes?

Theoretically yes, but fresh-pressed juices make all the difference. Ready-made juices often contain sugar or preservatives that alter the flavour. If you need to save time, use high-quality direct juices without additives – but fresh is always best.

Why does my Pussy Foot taste too sweet?

This is usually due to the grenadine. Many store-bought grenadines are extremely sweet and contain artificial flavours. Mix your own from pomegranate juice and sugar (ratio 1:1) or reduce the amount to 1.5 cl. A splash of lemon juice balances out the sweetness.

Can I garnish the drink without physalis?

Of course. Alternatives are an orange slice, a cocktail cherry or a pineapple slice. However, the physalis isn’t just decoration – it adds a slightly tart note that rounds off the flavour.

How long does the mocktail keep in the fridge?

Freshly prepared, it tastes best. In the fridge, it keeps for about 4–6 hours, but the juices lose aroma quickly. If you want to prepare it in advance, mix only the juices and add the grenadine just before serving.
