Port wine – What is it? Port wine is a renowned and protected wine from the Douro region in Portugal. It is made from grapes primarily grown in the Douro region and is fortified with brandy or grape spirit, halting fermentation and resulting in a higher alcohol content. This technique gives Port wine its characteristic sweet and rich flavor. Port wine comes in various styles, including: 1. Ruby Port: Young and fruity, typically aged in steel tanks. 2. Tawny Port: Aged in wooden casks, with a golden to amber hue and a softer, more complex flavor than Ruby Port. 3. Vintage Port: High-quality Port from the best vintages, produced only in exceptional years and aged for long periods. 4. Late Bottled Vintage (LBV) Port: Single-vintage Port aged longer in cask than standard Vintage Port. 5. White Port: A Port made from white grapes, often enjoyed as an aperitif. Port wine is typically served as a dessert wine or aperitif and pairs well with a variety of foods, particularly cheese, chocolate, and desserts.
