Midsummer: Celebrate your summer party with our mobile cocktail bar
Midsummer or Midsommar, as it’s called in Sweden – you can celebrate it with us too. Traditionally, it falls on 24 June, marking the summer solstice and the longest day of the year. The most important thing about this day is that you celebrate it with friends, ideally outdoors. We recommend our mobile cocktail bar and a selection of our delicious cocktails, with and without alcohol.
In Sweden, every town and municipality celebrates Midsummer. Everyone is welcome! But the feast is also set up in private gardens, where people laugh, dance, and drink.
A festival with a long tradition: 24 June, St John’s Day
A festival and many traditions: It’s not just good food and delicious drinks – at Midsummer, as with many ancient festivals, various traditions come together on one day. From Christian tradition, 24 June is St John’s Day, commemorating the birth of John the Baptist. Over time, the two important days – the midpoint of the year and the proximity to the summer solstice – have merged into one celebration. In Northern Europe, the day is marked with bonfires, music, and special foods.
Then there’s the thing we might associate most with a maypole: the Swedish „majstång“. Since the late Middle Ages, Swedes have erected this tree, wrapping it with branches and flowers and, yes, dancing around it. The Swedish „majstång“ doesn’t refer to May, the month of blooming, but derives from the verb „maja“, meaning „adorned with flowers“.
Seven flowers for the riddle of love
For those who live close to nature, Midsummer night is full of magic and mystery: plants develop healing powers, and some can even see the future. Young women would go out, collect seven different flowers, and place them under their pillows. According to tradition, if they’d done everything correctly, they would dream of their future husband that night. Gossiping flower pickers, however, were denied this gift. The flowers had to be gathered in silence.
Walking barefoot in the morning dew that follows Midsummer night is said to promote health. The flower wreath in the hair is still considered a symbol of rebirth and fertility, its power lasting throughout the year. When dried, the flowers were placed in the Christmas bath to keep the family healthy through the long, cold winter.
