Hibiscus-Ginger Lemonade – the Recipe Rezept

A lemonade with more to offer: hibiscus delivers deep color and tart depth, ginger adds sharp freshness, and lime rounds it off with zesty acidity. Agave syrup binds everything together without dominating. Perfect for hot days or as a non-alcoholic base for long drinks—simply top up with white rum or gin. The recipe lives by balance: too much ginger masks the floral note, too little leaves the spice missing.

And here’s what you need for the Hibiscus-Ginger Lemonade

2 cups (500 ml) water

2 tbsp dried hibiscus flowers

1 piece ginger (approx. 5 cm)

4 limes

4 tbsp agave syrup

1 litre sparkling water

Ice cubes

This is what matters

The trick is in the timing: the hibiscus tea must be *cold* before mixing with sparkling water—otherwise the lemonade loses its freshness. For a sharper kick, lightly press the ginger with the back of a knife before slicing: this releases more essential oils. And watch out when straining: hibiscus flowers stain badly—a white kitchen towel will often turn red afterward. Travel tip: transport the tea and ginger slices separately in a thermos flask and mix with sparkling water on-site.

Variations

  • Hibiscus-Ginger Spritz — For an alcoholic version, add 6 cl white rum or London Dry gin to the jug before adding the sparkling water. Garnish with a lime slice.
  • Frozen Hibiscus-Ginger Lemonade — Fill the finished tea with 2 tbsp agave syrup and the juice of 2 limes into ice cube trays and freeze. Later, drop the cubes into a glass, top up with sparkling water, and garnish with fresh ginger slices.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use fresh hibiscus?

Yes, but the flowers must be de-seeded and dried—fresh hibiscus flowers are too watery and barely color. Dried flowers are available at pharmacies or online. Dosage remains the same.

Why does my lemonade taste bitter?

Either the hibiscus tea was boiled for too long (max. 5 minutes!) or the ginger was old and woody. Fresh ginger is recognizable by its juicy break—if it’s fibrous, replace it.

How long does the hibiscus tea keep?

In the refrigerator for 2–3 days, but without sparkling water. The carbonation dissipates after a few hours, so always mix fresh. The plain tea can also be used as a base for iced tea or smoothies.
