The Dragonfruit Colada is the Piña Colada in pink: white Rum, pineapple, coconut and dragonfruit. Mild, creamy, photogenic – and still a real cocktail. The dragonfruit mainly adds color, while pineapple and coconut carry the flavor. A long drink that works just as well on the beach as at a summer party.
And this is what you need for the Dragonfruit Colada
4 cl white Rum
6 cl pineapple juice
3 cl coconut cream
4 cl dragonfruit purée
Garnish: pineapple and dragonfruit
What matters
Dragonfruit is subtle in flavor – it provides the color, not the main note. Therefore, do not reduce the purée, otherwise the drink will turn pale. If you use fresh dragonfruit, choose the pink variety with white flesh (Hylocereus undatus) – it colors more strongly than the white one. Simply peel, dice and blend briefly. Ready-made purée from a bottle saves time and delivers consistent color. Coconut cream is thicker than coconut milk and makes the drink more stably creamy.
Variations
- Dragonfruit Colada frozen — Blend all ingredients with a large handful of ice in a blender until smooth and icy.
- With dark Rum — Dark Rum adds caramel and roasted notes that work against the mild fruit – it works, but is stronger.
- With lime — 1 cl lime juice gives the drink more contour and enhances the pineapple.
Frequently asked questions
Which dragonfruit should I use?
The pink fruit with white flesh colors the most. White dragonfruit tastes similar but remains pale. Yellow dragonfruit is sweeter but rare.
Can I use coconut milk instead of coconut cream?
Yes, but the drink will be thinner and less creamy. Then reduce the amount to 2 cl and optionally add 1 cl cream.
Where can I get dragonfruit purée?
In well-stocked supermarkets, Asian grocery stores or online. Alternatively, peel fresh dragonfruit, dice and blend in a mixer.
Can I make the drink without a blender?
Yes, shaking it in a shaker will make it creamy enough. Only the frozen variation requires a blender.
