The Mango Daiquiri is the tropical take on the Cuban classic. White Rum meets mango purée and lime juice – the acidity needs to balance the fruit’s sweetness, or the drink will turn cloying. Unlike the Strawberry Daiquiri, this version requires more lime because mango is heavier and naturally less acidic. It’s not a smoothie, but a sour with fruit.

Here’s what you’ll need for the Mango Daiquiri

5 cl white Rum

2.5 cl lime juice

4 cl mango purée

1 cl sugar syrup (only for tart mango)

Garnish: mango or lime

Key points

The mango dictates whether you need syrup: ripe, sweet fruit needs no sugar, while tart or slightly underripe mango does. Taste the purée first – if it’s already sweet, skip the syrup. When shaking, put in some elbow grease: mango purée is thicker than juice, so shake longer and harder to fully integrate everything. The drink should be velvety, not frothy. If using frozen mango, let it thaw briefly first, or the drink will turn too cold and watery.

Variations

  • Frozen Mango Daiquiri — Blend all ingredients with a handful of crushed ice until creamy.
  • Mango-Chili Daiquiri — Add a thin slice of red chili pepper to the shaker while shaking – heat enhances the fruit.
  • With aged Rum — Swap white Rum for aged Rum for depth, but this works best with very ripe mangos.

Frequently Asked Questions

Purée or juice?

Purée adds texture and body, giving the drink a velvety feel. Juice works too, but use slightly less liquid and shake vigorously so it doesn’t end up too thin.

What mango to use?

Choose ripe, soft fruit with a strong aroma. Underripe mangos are fibrous and sour, while overripe ones turn mushy. Frozen purée (unsweetened) works well.

Why more lime than in the Strawberry Daiquiri?

Mango is heavier and sweeter than strawberries but has less natural acidity. Without enough lime, the drink can taste syrupy.
