Canadian Whisky – What is it?

Canadian Whisky is a type of whisky produced in Canada. It is often referred to as “Rye Whisky”, even though the rye content can vary compared to other whisky styles. Canadian Whisky is typically made by blending grain and rye distillates, which are then aged in oak barrels. Compared to Scotch or Bourbon, Canadian Whisky is generally milder and lighter in flavor.

Canadian Whisky has some characteristic features:

1. Blending: Many Canadian whiskies are blends of various distillates made from grains such as corn, rye, and barley.

2. Filtration: Some Canadian whiskies are charcoal-filtered to remove unwanted flavors and create a smoother taste.

3. Aging: Canadian Whisky is often aged for at least three years in oak barrels, though some varieties may be aged longer.

Canadian Whisky is often enjoyed neat or on the rocks and is also a popular ingredient in many cocktails, such as the classic Whisky Sour or the Toronto Cocktail. Some well-known Canadian Whisky brands include Crown Royal, Canadian Club, and Seagram’s.
