The Banana Daiquiri is not a frozen drink from the machine, but a shaken classic made with white Rum, lime and half a ripe banana. The fruit is freshly muddled, not blended – this keeps the texture lively and the flavour clear. Important: The banana must be yellow with brown spots, otherwise the drink will either taste starchy or like baby food. No fuss, just Rum, acidity, sweetness and fruit in perfect balance.

Here’s what you need for the Banana Daiquiri – the recipe

5 cl white Rum

2.5 cl freshly squeezed lime juice

1.5 cl 1:1 sugar syrup

½ ripe banana (approx. 50 g)

Garnish: 1 thin banana slice

What matters

The banana must be ripe but not overripe. Perfect is a yellow skin with brown spots – that’s when the starch has turned into sugar. Green bananas taste mealy, brown ones too sweet and mushy. Another trick: Peel the banana before muddling and place it in the freezer for 10 minutes. This makes it firmer and prevents it from turning to mush when crushed. If you prefer it creamier, you can stir in 1 cl coconut milk – but then it’s no longer a classic Daiquiri.

Variations

  • Frozen Banana Daiquiri – Blend all ingredients with 100 g crushed ice in a blender until smooth. The consistency should be like soft soft-serve ice cream – not too thin. Garnish: banana slice and a straw. Caution: The alcohol content here takes effect faster because the cold numbs the taste.
  • Banana Daiquiri with dark Rum – Use 5 cl dark Rum instead of white Rum. The drink becomes rounder and caramel-like but loses some freshness. Ideal for those who prefer it less tart. The banana harmonises perfectly with the vanilla and woody notes of the dark Rum.
  • Banana Mojito Daiquiri – Muddle 2 fresh mint leaves with the banana, then prepare as in the original recipe. The mint gives the drink a fresh, green note that balances the sweet Rum. Garnish: mint leaf and banana slice.

Frequently asked questions

Can I make the Banana Daiquiri with frozen banana?

Yes, but only if the banana was ripe before freezing. Frozen bananas tend to become watery – it’s better to briefly freeze the fresh banana (10 minutes) as described in the Key Detail. This keeps the texture stable.

Why is the drink double-strained?

Straining once lets small fruit pieces through, which makes the drink cloudy. The double strain removes everything so the Daiquiri sits clear and silky in the glass. If you prefer a rustic style, you can skip the second strain – but then the drink will be thicker.

Can I replace the sugar syrup with honey?

Honey works, but it changes the flavour. Honey is less neutral than sugar syrup and has its own sweetness that competes with the banana. If so, use only 1 cl liquid honey and increase the lime juice to 3 cl to maintain the balance.

Why does my Banana Daiquiri taste like alcohol?

Either it wasn’t shaken enough (the Rum has to combine with the other ingredients) or the shaker wasn’t cold enough. The Daiquiri needs hard shaking with plenty of ice so the alcohol becomes smooth. Alternatively: chill the Rum in the freezer for 10 minutes beforehand.
