The Zombie Brain is no cocktail for the squeamish – visually. In terms of taste, it’s a creamy, fruity trip to the Caribbean. The base of white Rum and coconut cream meets pineapple juice and Blue Curaçao, while grenadine conjures the famous brain effect. If you’re mixing the drink for the first time, you should pour the grenadine slowly and in a thin stream, otherwise the visual effect will blur. Perfect for Halloween parties or any evening when you crave something macabre with a sweet finish.
And this is what you need for the Zombie Brain
4 cl white Rum
2 cl Blue Curaçao
2 cl coconut cream
2 cl pineapple juice (freshly squeezed)
1 cl grenadine
Crushed Ice (approx. 150 g)
This is what matters
The brain effect only works if the density of the liquids is correct. Grenadine is heavier than the Rum mixture and therefore sinks. To intensify the effect, chill the grenadine in the fridge beforehand – then it will flow even slower. Important: Do not stir! The drink should remain layered until the guest drinks it. If you don’t have a blender, you can also shake the ingredients in the shaker with crushed ice, but the drink will then be less creamy and the effect less spectacular.
Variations
- Zombie Brain Light — For a less sweet variation, replace 1 cl coconut cream with 1 cl coconut water and increase the pineapple juice to 3 cl. The drink becomes fresher but loses some creaminess.
- Red Zombie — Replace Blue Curaçao with 2 cl strawberry syrup and omit the grenadine. The drink turns completely red and looks like bloody mush – less brain, more horror.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use regular ice cubes instead of crushed ice?
Yes, but the drink will be less creamy and the brain effect will appear less vivid. Crushed ice gives the Zombie Brain its typical, almost icy texture. If you don’t have a crushed ice machine, you can wrap ice cubes in a kitchen towel and crush them with a hammer.
Why does my Zombie Brain taste watery?
You probably mixed it for too long or the ice wasn’t cold enough. The blender should only run until everything is homogeneous – no longer. Also: Freshly squeezed pineapple juice is important, as pre-packaged juice is often more watery and has less flavor.
Can I prepare the drink without alcohol?
Yes, replace the white Rum with 4 cl alcohol-free Rum or simply more pineapple juice. The taste remains similar, only the strength is missing. The visual effect doesn’t suffer – the brain effect works even without alcohol.
