Widow’s Kiss – the Recipe Rezept

The Widow’s Kiss is an underrated classic that balances three bold flavours: the sweet herbal depth of Bénédictine, the peppery green intensity of Chartreuse, and the fruity spice of Calvados. Originally intended as a digestif, it now also works as an elegant aperitif – provided it’s not served too sweet. The recipe relies on precision: each liqueur has its role, and the soda water should only be added as a whisper, otherwise the drink becomes watery.

Here’s what you need for the Widow’s Kiss

1 cl Bénédictine (herbal liqueur)

1 cl yellow Chartreuse (herbal liqueur)

2 cl Calvados (apple brandy)

1 dash Angostura aromatic bitters

Soda water (to taste, approx. 3 cl)

Ice cubes (large, for slow dilution)

Key to success

The trick lies in the ice: large cubes melt more slowly and won’t dilute the drink too soon. For even more precision, chill the glass with ice water beforehand and discard it just before mixing. Chartreuse should always be the last liqueur to be returned to the bottle – its 40 % ABV causes it to oxidise faster when exposed to warmth. And remember: the dash of Angostura isn’t just garnish, it’s a flavour carrier. A single drop is enough to balance the sweetness of the liqueurs.

Variations

  • Widow’s Kiss No. 2 — Replace the Calvados with 2 cl blended Scotch whisky. The smoky character of the whisky enhances the drink’s herbal notes and makes it drier. Ideal for whisky lovers who find the original too sweet.
  • French Widow — Replace the Calvados with 2 cl Cognac and add a dash of lemon zest. The grape fruitiness of the Cognac better harmonises with the sweetness of the Bénédictine, giving the drink a rounder, softer character.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use green instead of yellow Chartreuse?

Theoretically yes, but the green Chartreuse, at 55 % ABV, is significantly stronger and has a more dominant, peppery flavour. The drink will become sharper and less balanced. If you want to try it, reduce the amount to 0.75 cl and compensate with more soda water.

Why does my Widow’s Kiss taste watery?

Probably because the ice is melting too quickly. Use large ice cubes or even a single ice block, and avoid stirring the drink for too long. The soda water should only be added at the very end – and then sparingly.

Is there an alcohol-free version?

For an alcohol-free version, replace the Bénédictine with 1 cl alcohol-free herbal liqueur, the Chartreuse with 1 cl alcohol-free herbal syrup, and the Calvados with 2 cl alcohol-free apple brandy. The flavour will be milder, but the herbal-bitter base note remains intact.
