Virgin Mojito – Non-Alcoholic – The Recipe Rezept

Basisspirituose
Alkoholfreie Cocktails (Mocktails)

The Virgin Mojito is the perfect summer drink: zesty, sweet-sour and with the freshness of mint. No rum is omitted here; instead, a second layer of aroma replaces it – lime zest and a hint of cucumber water give the mocktail depth without losing complexity. Ideal for anyone who wants an alcohol-free classic with a bartender’s touch.

And here’s what you need for the Virgin Mojito – alcohol-free

8–10 fresh mint leaves (plus 1 sprig for garnish)

1 tsp raw cane sugar (or white sugar, but raw cane adds a caramel note)

30 ml fresh lime juice (from 1–1.5 limes)

1 tsp lime zest (only the green peel, no pith)

1 cl cucumber water (blend 1 cucumber slice with 30 ml water, strain)

120 ml soda water (cold, but not ice-cold – otherwise it will fizz too much)

Crushed ice (about 1 cup)

The key to success

The trick is in the timing: add the soda *after* the ice. If you add it before, it loses its carbonation too quickly. And: crushed ice is a must – it cools faster and gives the drink its typical, almost slushy texture. For an even fresher taste, freeze mint leaves in ice cubes and use those instead of regular ice. As they melt, they’ll continuously release aroma.

Variations

  • Virgin Mojito with basil — Replace half of the mint leaves with fresh basil. Mix in 2 cl strawberry syrup for a fruity-herbal variation. Perfect for summer barbecues.
  • Virgin Mojito with ginger — Muddle 1 tsp freshly grated ginger with the sugar. Add 1 cl ginger syrup. A balance of spiciness and freshness – ideal for fans of bold flavors.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use regular ice cubes instead of crushed ice?

Yes, but the drink will cool more slowly and feel less homogeneous. Crushed ice chills immediately and gives the mojito its signature slightly slushy consistency. If you only have cubes, roughly crush them using a kitchen towel and a hammer.

Why does my Virgin Mojito sometimes taste bitter?

This is usually due to the lime zest: if you use too much of the white pith, it becomes bitter. Use only the green peel – and use it sparingly. Half a teaspoon is enough for one serving.

Can I replace the sugar with simple syrup?

Yes, but you’ll lose the slight texture that solid sugar adds when muddling the mint. If using syrup: use 1.5 cl and add it after muddling the mint.
