The Modern Martini – the Recipe Rezept

Basisspirituose
Alpro Drinks

The Martini is the epitome of elegant drinking culture, but who says it always has to taste the same? This Modern Martini breaks with tradition without betraying it: Instead of just Gin or Vodka, a touch of Matcha adds an earthy depth to the drink. Fresh basil is added— not just for garnish, but as a flavor-enhancing ingredient. The result is a cocktail that is tart, aromatic, and surprisingly light, even though it contains more than just one spirit in the glass. Perfect for anyone who wants to not just drink their Martini, but experience it.

Here’s what you need for the The Modern Martini

6 cl London Dry Gin (or Vodka for a more neutral version)

1 cl Matcha syrup (or 0.5 g Matcha powder stirred with 1 cl sugar syrup)

3 fresh basil leaves (plus 1 leaf for garnish)

1 splash of lemon zest (peel, not juice)

Ice cubes

The key to success

The trick lies in the Matcha: don’t just throw powder into the glass, but either work it into syrup or stir the powder with the sugar syrup first until it is completely dissolved. This way, it distributes evenly and leaves no bitter clumps. With basil, the rule is: don’t chop, just bruise the leaves—the delicate leaves release their aroma better when slightly damaged without falling apart. And yes, the glass must be ice-cold: chill it in the freezer for at least 10 minutes before pouring, otherwise the drink will melt too quickly and lose its structure.

Variations

  • Fruity Modern Martini — Replace the Matcha syrup with 2 cl pomegranate juice and add 1 cl lemon juice. Keep the basil leaves, but the drink will be juicier and less tart. Pairs well with ripe fruits like pear or kiwi.
  • Smoky Modern Martini — Add 1 cl Islay Scotch Whisky and replace the basil with 2 fresh rosemary sprigs. The whisky gives a smoky note, while the rosemary provides a resinous freshness. Ideal for those who prefer a stronger drink.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use green tea instead of Matcha?

No. Green tea does not have the same intensity and leaves a bitter aftertaste. Matcha is more concentrated and dissolves better in the cocktail. If you can’t find Matcha syrup, use the powder and stir it with sugar syrup—not water, otherwise the drink will become watery.

Why does the glass need to be ice-cold?

A Martini is not served with ice, so the glass itself must hold the chill. A warm glass will immediately water down the cocktail and make it taste flat. The cold also preserves the aromas and gives the drink its characteristic, almost oily texture.

Can I leave out the basil?

Technically yes, but then the drink will be missing a crucial component. Basil doesn’t just add freshness, it also rounds off the earthy note of the Matcha. Without it, the Martini tastes flatter and one-dimensional. If you don’t like basil, try mint or thyme instead.
