The Champion – the recipe Rezept

The Champion is an underrated classic that combines Scotch Whisky with the complex sweetness of Bénédictine and the freshness of soda. The drink tastes herbaceous and dry at first sip, but then unfolds a warm, spicy depth – perfect for those who don’t just want to drink whisky neat. The combination of herbal liqueur and vermouth gives it an almost European note, while the Scotch provides smoky Scottish undertones. A drink that doesn’t impose itself but stays in the memory.

Here’s what you need for The Champion

1 cl dry vermouth (Dry Vermouth)

1 cl blended Scotch Whisky

0.5 cl Bénédictine (herbal liqueur)

0.5 cl White Curaçao (orange liqueur)

Ice cubes

Soda water (to top up)

The secret lies in the shaking

The trick is in the timing of the shaking. Many shake whisky drinks for too short a time because they fear the alcohol will be diluted too much. But in this case, the opposite is true: the 12–15 seconds are crucial for the Scotch Whisky and vermouth to develop their aromas without the drink becoming too watery. Another tip is the ice in the shaker – it shouldn’t be too large, otherwise it will melt too slowly. Medium-sized cubes that quickly release cold but don’t crumble immediately are ideal. And: add the soda *after* straining, otherwise the drink will lose its texture.

Variations

  • The Champion (stirred) — For a softer, less diluted version: stir all ingredients except the soda in a mixing glass with ice for 20–25 seconds until the mixture is ice-cold. Then strain and top up with soda. The drink is more elegant but loses some of its lively texture.
  • The Champion with Rye — Replace the blended Scotch Whisky with 1 cl rye whiskey. The drink becomes spicier and drier, with a slight peppery note. Ideal for those who prefer a more robust taste.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Triple Sec instead of White Curaçao?

Yes, but the drink will lose complexity. White Curaçao has a slightly bitter, herbal note that Triple Sec doesn’t provide. If you use Triple Sec, reduce the amount to 0.3 cl to balance the sweetness.

Why does my Champion taste too sweet?

You’ve probably used too much Bénédictine or White Curaçao. Both liqueurs are sweet, but in the right dosage, they balance the herbaceousness of the vermouth and Scotch Whisky. Stick strictly to the quantities – or reduce the White Curaçao to 0.3 cl.

Can I prepare the drink without soda?

Technically yes, but then it will lack the refreshing sparkle that makes the Champion what it is. The soda lifts the aromas and makes the drink more palatable. Without soda, it tastes too heavy and alcoholic.
