Tequila Sunrise – the recipe Rezept

Basisspirituose
Alpro Drinks

The Tequila Sunrise is more than a colourful spectacle: Blanco Tequila meets fresh orange juice and is gently layered with grenadine. The result is a drink that starts sweet, finishes tart, and tastes different with every sip. Perfect for warm evenings when you want something light with a bite. The art lies not in mixing, but in the right timing – otherwise, the sunrise turns into a gloomy morning.

And here’s what you’ll need for a Tequila Sunrise

5 cl Blanco Tequila

8 cl freshly squeezed orange juice (not from a bottle – the acidity needs to be lively)

2 cl grenadine syrup (house brand or homemade from pomegranate juice and sugar)

2 cl lemon juice (fresh, for balance)

Garnish: 1 orange slice (thinly cut, with peel)

This is what matters

The trick with the grenadine: Many pour it in too quickly, and the syrup immediately mixes with the juice. The trick is to hold the spoon *directly* above the liquid surface and let the syrup drip *drop by drop*. If you want a clear layering, the syrup must not cascade into the glass like a waterfall. And: Do *not* use pre-chilled juice – the temperature difference destroys the layering. The juice should be at room temperature so the grenadine can sink beautifully to the bottom.

Variations

  • Tequila Sunset — Replace the grenadine syrup with 1.5 cl crème de cassis and 0.5 cl lemon juice. The result is less sweet but more complex, with a subtle berry note. Garnish: Lemon zest instead of an orange slice.
  • Spicy Sunrise — Add 2 slices of fresh jalapeño (with seeds) to the Tequila and orange juice, let the mixture steep for 1 minute, and strain out the chilli before adding the grenadine. For those who like it spicy – the heat builds gradually and surprisingly complements the sweetness.
  • Virgin Sunrise — Replace the Tequila with 5 cl non-alcoholic agave syrup or simply more orange juice. The flavour remains similar, but without alcohol – ideal for drivers or as a mocktail.

Frequently asked questions

Can I also use Reposado Tequila?

Yes, but the drink loses its clear, fresh note. Reposado Tequila, aged in wooden barrels, has a subtle vanilla and caramel note that competes with the fruity orange juice. For the classic Tequila Sunrise, Blanco is the better choice – it lets the juice and grenadine take centre stage.

Why does my Tequila Sunrise taste so sweet?

You’re probably using too much grenadine syrup or orange juice from a bottle. Bottled juice often contains added sugar, making the drink unnecessarily sweet. Freshly squeezed juice has natural acidity that balances the sweetness. Reduce the grenadine to 1.5 cl if you prefer it less sweet.

Can I prepare the drink in advance?

No. The Tequila Sunrise relies on fresh layering and the contrast between cold juice and slowly sinking grenadine. If you prepare it ahead, the syrup will mix with the juice, and the drink will lose its visual effect. Mix it only when the glass is in front of you.

What’s the best orange juice for this drink?

Freshly squeezed juice from ripe, sweet oranges – ideally a mix of Navel and blood oranges. The acidity of blood oranges gives the drink a slight bitterness that balances the Tequila and grenadine. Avoid juice with high acidity (e.g., from Seville oranges), otherwise the drink will taste too tart.
