The Tequila Old Fashioned replaces the whiskey with Reposado Tequila, bringing agave sweetness and woody notes into the glass. The preparation remains classic: sugar, bitters, spirit, ice. The drink shows how well Tequila works in stirring techniques — calmer and softer than in a shaker, with more depth than in a shot. An Old Fashioned for everyone who likes the classic but wants a different base.

And this is what you need for the Tequila Old Fashioned

6 cl Reposado Tequila

1 sugar cube or 1 cl sugar syrup

2–3 dashes Angostura Bitter

Orange zest

This is what matters

Reposado is a must here — Blanco would be too sharp, Añejo too woody. The Reposado brings just enough barrel age to carry the bitterness of the Angostura, while remaining agave-fresh. Don’t stir for too long: Tequila dilutes faster than whiskey because it contains less fat and tannin. Better to stir quickly, then add the ice. The orange zest is not just a decorative element — its oil softens the sharpness and enhances the fruitiness in the Tequila. If you like, you can also use Mole Bitter instead of Angostura, which fits culturally better and adds chocolate notes.

Variations

  • Mezcal Old Fashioned — with Mezcal instead of Tequila — smokier, earthier, needs less bitters
  • Oaxaca Old Fashioned — half Reposado Tequila, half Mezcal — the most well-known agave variation, often with Mole Bitter

Frequently asked questions

Can I also use Blanco Tequila?

You can, but it’s too sharp. Blanco has no barrel age, so the agave dominates too much. Reposado is the better choice — softer, rounder, with wood notes that fit the Old Fashioned profile.

Which bitters work best?

Angostura is the standard and works well. If you want to go deeper, try Mole Bitter or Chocolate Bitter — both fit culturally better with Tequila and add spices reminiscent of Mexican cuisine.

Why does the drink taste more watered down than a Whiskey Old Fashioned?

Tequila has less fat, tannin and extract than whiskey. That’s why it dilutes faster and can taste thinner. Solution: stir for a shorter time, use larger ice cubes, possibly add a bit more Tequila (7 cl instead of 6 cl).

Zubereitung
