The Strawberry Daiquiri is the most well-known variation of the Cuban Daiquiri, perfected in the 1940s at the Floridita Bar in Havana. Unlike the frozen slush version from beach bars, it is classically shaken—with fresh strawberries, white Rum, and lime. The result is a fruity but not overly sweet drink that balances acidity and fruit.

Here’s what you need for the Strawberry Daiquiri

5 cl white Rum

2 cl fresh lime juice

1.5 cl sugar syrup

4–5 fresh strawberries

1 strawberry for garnish

The key to success

The difference between a good and mediocre Strawberry Daiquiri lies in the shaking: The strawberries should not be completely puréed, as this would make the drink mushy and cloudy. Instead, lightly press them and then shake vigorously with plenty of ice—the ice will finely break up the fruit pieces without passing through the strainer. Double straining is essential. Also: Use ripe, aromatic strawberries, not watery supermarket fruit from winter. If you don’t use fresh lime juice, you might as well skip the drink altogether.

Variations

  • Frozen Strawberry Daiquiri — Blend all ingredients with 150 g ice in a blender until a smooth slush consistency is achieved. Serve in a Hurricane glass.
  • Strawberry Basil Daiquiri — Lightly press 3–4 basil leaves with the strawberries, then shake as usual. Adds a spicy, almost peppery note.
  • Hemingway Strawberry Daiquiri — Add 1 cl maraschino and 1 cl grapefruit juice, omit sugar syrup. More tart and complex, for advanced drinkers.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use frozen strawberries?

Yes, but they should be lightly thawed first. Frozen strawberries dilute the drink less than fresh ones but often have less flavor. You may need to use a bit more sugar syrup.

Which Rum works best?

A light, dry white Rum like Havana Club 3 or Bacardi Carta Blanca. Dark Rum overpowers the strawberry note, aged Rum doesn’t fit the flavor profile.

Why is the drink cloudy?

Usually because the strawberries were over-muddled or shaken for too long. Only lightly press them and shake for a maximum of 15 seconds. Double straining also helps.

Can I use strawberry syrup instead of fresh fruit?

Technically yes, but then you’ll have a strawberry-flavored Daiquiri, not a Strawberry Daiquiri. The freshness and texture of real fruit are completely missing.

Zubereitung
