Strawberry Colada – the recipe Rezept

The Strawberry Colada is not a Piña Colada with strawberries, but rather a standalone drink: the acidity of fresh strawberries cuts through the sweetness of the coconut cream and brings the pineapple juice to life. The ratio is crucial – too much coconut overpowers the fruit, too little makes the rum too dominant. It is served ice-cold, but not watery: the ice is only crushed at the last moment so that it doesn’t melt before the blender starts running.

And this is what you need for the Strawberry Colada

6 cl white Rum

8 cl pineapple juice (freshly pressed or high-quality direct-squeeze brand)

2 cl coconut cream (not coconut milk – the consistency is key)

6 hulled strawberries (medium-sized, ripe, but not mushy)

4–6 ice cubes (for crushing)

What matters

Mix the strawberries *before* blending with a pinch of salt and a splash of lemon juice (0.2 cl) in a bowl. The salt suppresses the grassy note of unripe fruit, and the acid prevents the strawberries from turning brown. For an even more intense flavor, purée the strawberries separately with 0.5 cl simple syrup and add the purée only at the end – this keeps the color bright red and the flavor concentrated.

Variations

  • Frozen Strawberry Colada — For a slushy consistency, use double the amount of ice and pause the blender occasionally to scrape down the sides. Serve with a straw.
  • Spicy Strawberry Colada — Add 1 slice of fresh chili (with seeds) to the blender for 30 seconds, then remove. Adds a subtle heat that balances the sweetness.
  • Strawberry Colada Fizz — Pour the finished mix into a highball glass with fresh ice and top up with 6 cl chilled Prosecco or sparkling wine. Gently stir to preserve the fizz.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use frozen strawberries?

Yes, but only unsweetened. Thaw, drain, and pat dry with kitchen paper, otherwise the drink will turn watery. The flavor is less intense than with fresh berries, so use 8–10 pieces.

Why does my Colada turn grey instead of pink?

Either the strawberries were overripe (too brown) or the ice was too warm. Always use fresh, bright red berries and crush the ice only just before blending. For extra security, purée the strawberries separately with a little lemon juice and add them to the mix only at the end.

Coconut cream vs. coconut milk – what’s the difference?

Coconut cream is thicker and sweeter, with a fat content of 20–25%. Coconut milk (5–10% fat) makes the drink thinner and less creamy. For the Colada, cream is essential – milk doesn’t work.
