Spiced Cranberry Punch – the Recipe Rezept

A festive punch that combines cranberry juice with the warmth of cinnamon and the depth of brown Rum. Not too sweet, not too tart – just the right measure for long evenings. The drink works cold in the glass, but also warm as a winter variation. The acidity of the cranberries balances the sweetness of the syrup, while the Rum provides a gentle but noticeable alcohol note. Perfect for social gatherings where you don’t want to keep refilling glasses.

And this is what you need for the Spiced Cranberry Punch

240 ml cranberry juice (unsweetened)

60 ml orange juice (freshly squeezed)

30 ml cinnamon syrup (homemade or store-bought)

60 ml brown Rum

1 splash of lime juice

Fresh cranberries for garnish

1 cinnamon stick (optional, for stirring)

What matters

The trick lies in the cinnamon syrup: If you make it yourself, use whole cinnamon sticks and let them steep in the syrup for at least 24 hours – don’t just boil briefly. This gives a deeper, rounder spice. If you use store-bought syrup, add a pinch of freshly ground cinnamon directly to the punch bowl before mixing the liquids. This enhances the aroma without adding extra sweetness. And: The punch often tastes better the next day, as the flavors have had time to meld. Simply store in the fridge and stir again before serving.

Variations

  • Wintery Cranberry Punch — Heat the mixture of cranberry juice, orange juice, and cinnamon syrup in a saucepan until it steams (do not boil!). Add the brown Rum just before serving so the alcohol doesn’t evaporate. Pour into pre-warmed glasses and garnish with an orange slice and a cinnamon stick.
  • Cranberry Gin Punch — Replace the brown Rum with 60 ml London Dry Gin. Add 2 cl rosemary syrup and garnish with a sprig of rosemary. The Gin brings a fresh, peppery note that pairs well with the cranberries.
  • Non-alcoholic variation — Omit the Rum and replace it with 60 ml non-alcoholic rum-flavored syrup or simply more orange juice. For a sparkling touch, add a splash of ginger ale or tonic water.

Frequently asked questions

Can I prepare the punch in advance?

Yes, but add the Rum just before serving, otherwise the drink loses its freshness. The juice and syrup mixture keeps in the fridge for 2–3 days. Stir well before serving, as the cinnamon syrup can settle.

Which Rum works best?

A brown Rum with a slight vanilla and caramel tone pairs perfectly. Overly smoky or tropical Rums can overpower the cranberry flavor. A medium-bodied Rum from the Caribbean or Latin America is ideal.

Can I use frozen cranberries?

For garnish, fresh cranberries are better because they’re crunchier. Frozen cranberries work well for making your own juice: Simply thaw, blend, and strain through a sieve.
