The Sidecar is one of the great cocktails of the 1920s – Cognac, Cointreau, lemon, done. Allegedly invented at the Paris Ritz or the London Buck’s Club for a guest arriving by sidecar motorcycle. What remains: a perfectly balanced Sour that lets the Cognac shine without overwhelming it. Sugar rim is optional, standard in many bars but not mandatory.

And here’s what you need for the Sidecar

5 cl Cognac (VS or VSOP)

2 cl Cointreau

2 cl fresh lemon juice

Sugar for the rim (optional)

Orange zest

What matters

The proportions are a matter of taste: The original recipe from Harry’s New York Bar is said to have been 1:1:1, but this is often too sour and too sweet at the same time. The now common 5:2:2 formula lets the Cognac lead and gives it room. Important: Shake it really cold – a lukewarm Sidecar tastes like cheap lemonade. And don’t use XO Cognac; it gets lost in the acidity. A solid VS or VSOP is enough. The sugar rim is historically correct but a matter of taste – try both.

Variations

  • Between the Sheets — 3 cl Cognac, 3 cl white rum and 3 cl Cointreau, 2 cl lemon juice – rounder, softer, less sharp.
  • White Lady — Replace Cognac with gin – same proportions, entirely different character, more floral, drier.
  • Champs-Élysées — 5 cl Cognac, 2 cl Chartreuse Verte, 2 cl lemon juice, 1 cl sugar syrup, 2 dashes Angostura – herbal, more complex.

Frequently asked questions

Which Cognac works best?

VS or VSOP – more age brings nothing here, the acidity covers fine notes. Rémy Martin VSOP, Courvoisier VS or Pierre Ferrand Ambré work well.

Can I use Grand Marnier instead of Cointreau?

Yes, but it becomes sweeter and heavier – Grand Marnier is Cognac-based and darker. Then possibly add 0.5 cl more lemon juice.

Why does the drink sometimes turn cloudy?

Essential oils from the zest or shaking for too long with too little ice – then water melts in instead of just cooling. Double straining helps.

Sugar rim – yes or no?

Traditionally yes, but many modern bars skip it. Try both versions – with sugar it’s milder, without it’s clearer and more direct.

Zubereitung
