The Screwdriver is proof that simplicity is often the best solution. Two ingredients, one glass, done. But behind this seemingly simple drink lies more than just vodka and orange juice: the quality of the juice determines freshness, and the temperature of the glass makes the difference between a good and a perfect drink. A classic that should not be missing from any bar – and one that is perfect for your first mixology experiment.
And this is what you need for the Screwdriver
4 cl Vodka
8 cl freshly squeezed orange juice
1 orange slice (for garnish)
What matters
The trick is in the juice: do not use a pasteurised variety from the carton, but freshly squeezed orange juice – preferably from blood oranges when in season. The acidity and sweetness should be in balance; otherwise the drink will taste either too flat or too overpowering. If the juice is too tart, a pinch of sugar or a splash of sugar syrup will help. And: rinse the glass with cold water beforehand so the ice doesn’t melt straight away and dilute the drink.
Variations
- Harvey Wallbanger — 4 cl Vodka and 8 cl orange juice as in the original, but with 1 cl Galliano (vanilla-herbal liqueur) floated on top. The liqueur gives the drink a sweet, spicy note and a golden layer on the surface.
- Cuban Screwdriver — replace the Vodka with 4 cl white Rum and mix with 8 cl orange juice. Optionally finish with 2 splashes of lime juice for a slightly tangy freshness.
- Spicy Screwdriver — mix 4 cl Vodka with 8 cl orange juice and refine with 2–3 thin slices of fresh chilli or a splash of chilli syrup. Perfect with Mexican dishes or as a spicy contrast to sweet starters.
Frequently asked questions
Can I also use store-bought orange juice?
Technically yes, but not in terms of taste. Freshly squeezed juice has more aroma and a natural acidity that balances the drink. Pasteurised juices often taste flat and too sweet. If you need to go quick, at least use direct juice (not from concentrate).
Why is the drink called Screwdriver?
The name allegedly dates back to the 1940s, when American oil workers in Persia mixed vodka with orange juice – and used a screwdriver (as in the tool) as a stirrer. Whether the story is true is unclear, but the name stuck.
Can I also shake the drink?
Better not. The Screwdriver is traditionally built so that the orange juice retains its natural texture. When shaken, it gets mixed with too much air and tastes frothy. If you still want to try it, shake briefly and strain the drink carefully.
Which Vodka variety is best?
A neutral, high-quality Vodka with little inherent flavour. Too cheap brands often leave an unpleasant aftertaste. If you want to experiment, try a slightly spicy Vodka (e.g. with pepper or citrus notes) – but always combine with fresh juice.
