Royal Bramble – the recipe Rezept

The Royal Bramble elevates the classic Bramble with a touch of luxury: instead of simple syrup, it’s the icy chill of Champagne that carries the fruity acidity of the blackberry liqueur and the citrusy freshness of the Gin to perfection. The result is an elegant, effervescent drink that tastes of summer – yet with a note that shines even on cooler evenings. The lemon peel doesn’t just add aroma, it also provides a visual touch that makes the drink instantly recognizable.

Here’s what you’ll need for the Royal Bramble

4 cl London Dry Gin

1 cl fresh lemon juice

1 cl blackberry liqueur

Ice cubes

6 cl ice-cold Champagne (or Crémant)

1 piece of organic lemon peel (approx. 4 cm long, 2 cm wide)

The key to success

The trick lies in timing: the Champagne should only be added to the already chilled drink to prevent the bubbles from dissipating too quickly. Use a high-quality blackberry liqueur with natural fruit – cheap versions often taste like artificial syrup and disrupt the balance. Don’t just see the lemon peel as a garnish: the oils are essential for the freshness and elevate the herbal notes of the Gin. If the drink tastes too sweet, a splash of lemon juice helps – but use it sparingly, or the acidity will take over.

Variations

  • Raspberry Royal Bramble — Replace the blackberry liqueur with raspberry liqueur and garnish with a fresh raspberry. Particularly well-suited to floral Gins.
  • Blackberry Smash — Without Champagne, but with 3–4 fresh blackberries lightly muddled in the shaker. Shake with 2 cl simple syrup and 1 cl lemon juice, then top up with soda water. A rustic, fruit-forward style.
  • Royal Bramble Fizz — Replace the Champagne with 6 cl ice-cold soda water. Less elegant, but perfect for hot days – the effervescence makes the drink even more refreshing.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Prosecco instead of Champagne?

Yes, but opt for a dry Prosecco (Brut or Extra Brut). Sweeter versions make the drink too sugary. Champagne brings a finer bead and more complexity – Prosecco is a good, more affordable alternative, but not equivalent.

Why does the lemon peel need to go into the glass?

The peel contains essential oils that enhance the drink’s aroma. If you just rub it over the rim, the oils evaporate quickly – inside the glass, they linger longer and deliver a fresh note with every sip. Without it, the drink tastes flatter.

Can I prepare the drink in advance?

No. The Champagne loses its bubbles, and the ice dilutes the drink too much. Pre-mix the Gin base and keep it chilled, but add the Champagne only shortly before serving. The lemon peel should also go into the glass at the very last moment.
