Rosemary – What is it?

Rosemary is an aromatic evergreen plant belonging to the genus Rosmarinus in the mint family (Lamiaceae). The leaves of rosemary are needle-shaped and dark green with a silvery sheen on the underside. Rosemary is known for its intense aroma and flavour, which is both earthy and spicy. The plant is widely used in Mediterranean cuisine and imparts a distinctive taste to many dishes, particularly meat dishes, soups, stews, sauces and marinades. Rosemary is often used fresh or dried and can also be used to flavour oils, vinegars and beverages such as tea. In traditional medicine, rosemary is valued for its supposed health benefits, including its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The plant thrives in sunny, dry conditions and is popular in many parts of the world as an ornamental plant and in cooking.
