Rob Roy – The Recipe Rezept

The Rob Roy is the Scottish cousin of the Manhattan: instead of Rye Whiskey, Blended Scotch Whisky goes into the glass, and the Vermouth Rosso brings a softer, almost malty sweetness. Two dashes of Angostura are enough to emphasize the oak spice of the whisky without overpowering it. A drink for whisky drinkers who don’t want to drink their Scotch neat but still want to taste the smoke and depth. It is served ice-cold, but without ice – the chill comes solely from stirring.

And this is what you need for the Rob Roy

4 cl Blended Scotch Whisky

2 cl Vermouth Rosso

2 dashes Angostura Bitter

1 cocktail cherry (for garnish)

Here’s the trick

The Rob Roy lives off the balance between the smoky Scotch and the sweet Vermouth. The key lies in stirring: too much ice melts too quickly and makes the drink watery, too little ice doesn’t cool sufficiently. Large, clear ice cubes that melt slowly are ideal. If you want it even more intense, you can chill the Vermouth briefly in the fridge before stirring – then it blends better with the whisky. And: the cocktail cherry isn’t just a decorative element, it rounds off the flavour. A high-quality cherry (no neon-red supermarket version) gives the last sip a fruity note.

Variations

  • Dry Rob Roy — Replace the Vermouth Rosso with 2 cl dry vermouth. The drink becomes more robust and less sweet, ideal for Scotch lovers who prefer a purist style. Garnish: a lemon twist instead of the cherry.
  • Perfect Rob Roy — Combine 1 cl Vermouth Rosso and 1 cl dry vermouth. The mix of sweet and herbaceous emphasizes the complexity of the Scotch. Garnish: an orange twist, lightly expressed over the glass.
  • Rob Roy with Honey — Add 0.5 cl honey syrup to emphasize the malty sweetness of the Scotch. Particularly pairs well with smoky whiskies. Garnish: a cocktail cherry and a pinch of toasted oat flakes as a smoke accent.

Frequently asked questions

Can I also use Single Malt Scotch Whisky?

Yes, but Single Malt is often more intense and smokier than Blended Scotch. Reduce the quantity to 3.5 cl and taste the drink before straining – some Single Malts can overpower the Vermouth. A milder Single Malt (e.g. from Speyside) works better than a peaty Islay whisky.

Why is the Rob Roy stirred and not shaken?

Stirring cools the drink evenly without diluting it or incorporating too much oxygen. Shaken whisky cocktails often turn cloudy and lose their silky texture. The Rob Roy should be clear and smooth – like liquid amber.

Can I leave out the Angostura Bitter?

Theoretically yes, but the Bitter gives the drink depth and rounds off the sweetness of the Vermouth. Without it, the Rob Roy tastes flat and one-dimensional. If there’s no Angostura available, 1–2 dashes of orange bitters will suffice as a substitute.

How cold should the cocktail glass be?

Store it in the freezer for at least 10 minutes or rinse with ice water, then dry thoroughly. A warm glass will immediately rob the drink of its chill and make it taste flat. Tip: Fill the glass with ice before stirring, empty it just before straining – this keeps the temperature stable.
