Rainy Days – the Recipe Rezept

Rainy Days is the perfect drink for grey days: vodka provides the clear base, crème de cassis adds a dark sweetness, and orange juice brings fresh acidity. The physalis as a garnish sets a vibrant accent – like a ray of sunshine in the glass. Quick to mix, but with depth: ideal when you want something light that still has character.

And this is what you need for the Rainy Days

4 cl vodka

1 cl lime juice (freshly squeezed)

6 cl orange juice (fresh, not from concentrate)

1 cl crème de cassis

1 physalis (for garnish)

This is what matters

The trick lies in the crème de cassis: it shouldn’t be too sweet, otherwise it will dominate the orange juice. A liqueur with at least 20 % fruit content provides the necessary depth without being cloying. If the lime juice becomes too dominant, add half a teaspoon of sugar syrup – but taste first before sweetening further. Don’t just see the physalis as decoration: its slightly tart note harmonises perfectly with the cassis.

Variations

  • Rainy Days Spritz — top the drink with 3 cl soda water and serve in a large wine glass with ice. Replace the physalis with an orange slice – less elaborate but just as refreshing.
  • Blackberry Rain — replace the crème de cassis with 2 cl blackberry liqueur and use a fresh blackberry as garnish. More tart, but with a stronger berry note.

Frequently asked questions

Can I replace the orange juice with pineapple juice?

Yes, but the drink will lose its typical acidity balance. Pineapple juice is sweeter and less acidic – reduce the crème de cassis to 0.5 cl to avoid an overly sweet result.

Why does my Rainy Days taste watery?

Probably too little or too warm ice was used. The shaker should be filled up to half with large, fresh ice cubes, and shaking needs to be vigorous and quick to prevent the drink from becoming watered down.

Can I replace the vodka with gin?

Technically yes, but the character of the drink changes significantly. Gin adds a herbal note that may clash with the cassis and orange juice. If you try it, choose a London Dry gin with minimal juniper aroma.
