Prosecco – What is it?
Prosecco is an Italian sparkling wine typically made from the Glera grape, traditionally grown in the vineyards of the Veneto region in northern Italy. Prosecco is produced using the Charmat method, where the second fermentation takes place in large pressure tanks, resulting in a sparkling quality.
Prosecco is known for its fresh, fruity, and lively character. There are different types of Prosecco, including the usually dry “Prosecco Extra Dry” and the slightly sweeter “Prosecco Brut”. Prosecco is often enjoyed as an aperitif but can also be used in various cocktails such as the Bellini or the Spritz.
It is important to note that Prosecco is legally protected, and only sparkling wines from specific regions in Italy, mainly Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia, are allowed to carry the name “Prosecco”.
