Pink Phantom – the Recipe Rezept

The Pink Phantom plays with the contrast between dry London Dry Gin, floral vermouth and the sweet-sour depth of grenadine. A hint of absinthe gives the drink a mystical note – like a ghost that flashes briefly and then vanishes. Perfect for those who enjoy gin but are looking for something unexpected. The colour calls to mind a sunset in the glass, the flavour evokes a hidden bar in an alley.

Here’s what you need for the Pink Phantom

3 cl London Dry Gin

1 cl dry vermouth

0.5 cl grenadine

2 dashes absinthe (approx. 0.2 cl)

1 dash lemon juice (approx. 0.1 cl)

Ice cubes

Key points

The absinthe here is no main character, but a secret. Instead of adding it directly to the glass, it should be added only after straining – this keeps its aroma fresh and allows it to unfold only on the first sip. Important: Use a high-quality absinthe with at least 55 % vol., otherwise its character will be lost in the gin. The grenadine should be homemade or at least a reduced-sugar version; otherwise the drink becomes too sweet. Tip for the colour: If the mixture looks too pale, add one extra dash of grenadine *after* straining – but only one, otherwise the balance will tip.

Variations

  • Smoky Phantom — Replace the London Dry Gin with a smoky gin (e.g. with smoked juniper) and add a dash of Islay whisky. The result is more intense and evokes a campfire cocktail.
  • Floral Phantom — Add 0.2 cl rose water or lavender syrup while stirring. The drink becomes more floral without losing its dry-spicy base. Pairs well with a gin that has floral notes such as elderflower or chamomile.

Frequently asked questions

Can I leave out the absinthe?

Yes, but the drink will lose its mystical note. The absinthe gives the Pink Phantom its characteristic depth. If you don’t have any, replace it with a dash of anise liqueur or simply omit it – the cocktail will then taste fruitier and less complex.

Why is the lemon juice only added at the end?

The lemon juice should not be stirred in, as it would otherwise disrupt the balance of the drink. It serves as the final freshness note and should only lightly mix with the absinthe. This way the first sip is surprising and the second different.

Which glass is best suited?

A classic cocktail glass (martini glass) is ideal as it showcases the colour and layering of the drink. Alternatively, a Nick & Nora glass also works; it’s slightly smaller and concentrates the aromas.
