Pineapple Planter’s Punch – the Recipe Rezept

The Pineapple Planter’s Punch is a fruity variation of the Caribbean original, combining Rum with sweet-sour pineapple and fresh lime. The blend of white Rum, Curaçao and a hint of Maraschino lends depth to the drink without overpowering its freshness. It’s served with cherries macerated in Rum – a detail that intensifies the flavour once again. Perfect for warm days or as an introduction to the world of Punches.

Here’s what you’ll need for the Pineapple Planter’s Punch

4 cl white Rum

4 cl pineapple juice (freshly pressed)

Juice of ½ lime (approx. 1.5 cl)

1 cl Curaçao (orange liqueur)

1 dash Maraschino (cherry liqueur)

Ice cubes

2–3 cocktail cherries (macerated in Rum)

What matters most

The cherries aren’t just a decorative element: they should soak in white Rum for at least 10 minutes before being added to the drink. The Rum absorbs the cherries’ sweetness and slowly releases it into the Punch. For an even more intense flavour, you can prick the cherries with a fork before soaking. Important: use freshly pressed pineapple juice – store-bought juice from a carton often tastes too sweet and lacks the natural acidity that balances the drink.

Variations

  • Spicy Pineapple Planter’s Punch — Add 2 slices of fresh chilli (e.g. Bird’s Eye) and let them infuse for 2 minutes before removing. Pairs well with brown Rum for added depth.
  • Coconut Planter’s Punch — Replace 2 cl of pineapple juice with coconut milk and reduce the Curaçao to 0.5 cl. Garnish: toasted coconut flakes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make the drink with brown Rum?

Yes, but the flavour changes significantly. Brown Rum brings more caramel and vanilla notes, which can overpower the pineapple’s fruitiness. In that case, reduce the Curaçao to 0.5 cl and add a dash of Angostura Bitters to balance the sweetness.

Why does my Punch taste watery?

Probably because the ice melts too quickly. Use large ice cubes or a single ice block – they last longer. Alternatively, you can shake the drink (with ice) briefly and then strain it into a pre-chilled glass to control dilution.

Can I substitute Maraschino with grenadine?

No, the two liqueurs have entirely different profiles. Maraschino adds a subtle cherry note and gentle sweetness, while grenadine is very fruity and intensely sweet. If you don’t have Maraschino, simply omit it – the drink works without it too.
