Peppermint White Russian – the Recipe Rezept

The White Russian gets a wintery touch: Peppermint rounds off the sweetness of coffee liqueur and cream, leaving a fresh, slightly sharp finish. No candy-cane syrup, but real mint syrup – that’s the difference between a Christmas market and a bar. Perfect for those who like their drink creamy, but not sticky. The crushed candy garnish is optional, but it gives the glass that final visual kick.

And here’s what you need for the Peppermint White Russian

5 cl Vodka

3 cl Coffee liqueur

3 cl Heavy cream (min. 30 % fat)

1.5 cl Peppermint syrup (fresh or high-quality, no peppermint liqueur)

Crushed candy cane or mint leaf for garnish

This is what matters

The trick is in the syrup: Do not use industrial peppermint liqueur, but real mint syrup – either homemade (sugar, water, fresh mint leaves) or a high-quality non-alcoholic brand. The liqueur covers the mint with alcohol taste, while the syrup only adds fresh sharpness. If you want to replace the cream: Unsweetened coconut milk works, but it changes the texture – less creamy, more silky. And: Chill the glass beforehand, otherwise the ice melts too quickly and the drink loses its balance.

Variations

  • Peppermint Black Russian — Without cream – the mint syrup mixes directly with vodka and coffee liqueur. Sharper, drier, but still sweet. Ideal for those who prefer it less creamy.
  • Chocolate Peppermint White Russian — Replace the coffee liqueur with chocolate liqueur and add a pinch of cinnamon. The mint surprisingly harmonises with the chocolate – almost like a liquid After Eight.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use milk instead of cream?

Yes, but the texture will be thinner and the drink loses creaminess. If you use milk, take whole milk and reduce the mint syrup to 1 cl – otherwise it will taste too sweet. Cream is the better choice here because it blends better with the liqueur.

Why doesn’t the mint syrup sink properly?

This happens when the cream is too cold or too thick. Take the cream out of the fridge 10 minutes before mixing or dilute it slightly with 1 cl milk. Alternatively: Warm the syrup slightly before pouring – but do not boil it.

Can I shake the drink?

No. The White Russian lives from its layers. If you shake it, everything mixes and the drink becomes homogeneous – that’s a different cocktail. If you still want to try it: Then call it Peppermint White Russian Shake.
