oh! Henry! – the recipe Rezept

A drink that tastes of monastery and smoke – Benedictine, a French herbal liqueur with 27 herbs, meets Whisky and is brightened up with zesty Ginger Ale. The combination is initially bitter, then sweet, then fresh again. Perfect for anyone who finds Whisky too intense on its own but still wants depth. Not a cocktail for beginners, but one that shows how liqueur can elevate a spirit without overpowering it.

And this is what you need for the oh! Henry!

2 cl Benedictine (herbal liqueur)

2 cl Blended Scotch Whisky

Ginger Ale (to taste, approx. 10–12 cl)

3–4 ice cubes

What matters most

The trick lies in the ice: Use large, clear cubes that melt slowly. This keeps the drink more concentrated for longer, and the aromas of the Benedictine – especially notes of honey, cinnamon, and angelica root – come through better. If you prefer it stronger, you can increase the Whisky to 3 cl, but then the drink will quickly become too dominant. Important: Add the Ginger Ale only at the end, otherwise it loses its fizz and tastes flat.

Variations

  • oh! Henry! with Rye Whiskey — Replace the Blended Scotch Whisky with 2 cl Rye Whiskey. The drink becomes spicier and drier, with a slight peppery note. Pairs well with darker Benedictine or a cinnamon stick as a garnish.
  • oh! Henry! with Bourbon Whiskey — Bourbon Whiskey (2 cl) makes the drink sweeter and more vanilla-like. Ideal if the Benedictine seems too bitter. Garnish with an orange slice to emphasize the fruit notes.
  • oh! Henry! with ginger syrup — Instead of Ginger Ale, use 2 cl ginger syrup and soda water. The drink becomes more intense in flavor but less fizzy. Serve with a lime slice.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a different herbal liqueur instead of Benedictine?

Yes, but the taste will change significantly. Chartreuse (green) makes the drink herbally spicy, while Drambuie adds more honey and spices. Benedictine is the classic choice because it has a balanced sweetness and herbal depth.

Why does my oh! Henry! taste flat?

Probably because the Ginger Ale was added too early or stirred too vigorously. The fizz dissipates quickly. Add it only at the end and stir just once gently. Also, use cold Ginger Ale straight from the fridge.

Can I serve the drink without ice?

No. The ice is essential to blend the aromas and bring the drink to the right drinking temperature. Without ice, it tastes too strong and unbalanced.
