Muddy Waters – the recipe Rezept

The Muddy Waters is an uncomplicated yet surprisingly layered long drink that combines coffee liqueur with cola. Its name plays with the murky, almost muddy appearance – and that’s exactly what makes it interesting. The liqueur brings sweet roasted aromas, while the cola rounds it off with caramel and a slight acidity. A drink for those who like it sweet but not too sweet, and who aren’t afraid of a bold color. Perfect for after-work drinks or as a digestif when you need something sweet after a meal.

And this is what you need for the Muddy Waters

2 cl coffee liqueur

finely crushed ice (approx. 200 ml)

12 cl cola (to taste)

Here’s what matters

The secret lies in the ice. Finely crushed ice not only cools the drink faster but also dilutes it more evenly than large cubes. For even more precision, fill the glass with ice first, then pour the cola over it and let it steep briefly before adding the liqueur. This creates a natural layering without having to tediously stack the ingredients. Another trick: the cola shouldn’t be ice-cold, otherwise it will foam too much and the drink will lose aroma. Room temperature is ideal.

Variations

  • Muddy Waters with Rum — Replace the coffee liqueur with 2 cl brown Rum and add a half lemon slice to the glass. The rum brings a subtle vanilla note and makes the drink fruitier. Works especially well with a cola that has a hint of citrus.
  • Muddy Waters with Whisky — Add 1 cl Bourbon Whisky to the coffee liqueur before topping up with cola. The whisky enhances the roasted aromas and gives the drink a smoky depth. Make sure the whisky isn’t too dominant – it should support the liqueur, not overpower it.
  • Muddy Waters with Chili — Add a pinch of chili powder or a thin slice of fresh chili to the glass before adding the ice. The heat balances the sweetness of the liqueur and cola, making the drink more complex. Pairs especially well with a cola with a high caffeine content.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use other liqueurs?

Yes, but the character of the drink will change. Hazelnut liqueur makes it nuttier, chocolate liqueur sweeter and creamier. Coffee liqueur, however, is the classic choice because its earthy, bitter notes best complement the cola. Give it a try, but stick to liqueurs with a similar viscosity – too thin liqueurs will mix immediately with the cola.

Does it have to be cola?

Cola is the standard choice because its caramel sweetness and slight acidity pair perfectly with coffee liqueur. Alternatively, you can try Ginger Ale or another caffeinated soft drink, but then you’ll lose the classic Muddy Waters flavor. If you want to replace the cola, choose something with similar sweetness and a slight acidity, e.g., a cola mix made from lemonade and a bit of vanilla syrup.

Why does my Muddy Waters taste watery?

This is usually due to the ice. If you use large ice cubes, they melt slowly and dilute the drink unevenly. Finely crushed ice cools faster and releases less water. Another reason could be that you’re using too much cola – the drink shouldn’t be too diluted. Stick to the ratio and don’t stir for too long.
