Midnight in Moscow – The Recipe Rezept

Midnight in Moscow is not a classic Moscow Mule, but a modern bar drink that stands out through the contrast of bitter-sweet grapefruit and bold Vodka. The blue Curaçao lends the drink a deep blue hue – a colour play reminiscent of a night-time cityscape. Refreshing yet with a bite, it’s ideal for warm evenings or as an ice-breaker. Tonic Water gives it a lively lightness without drowning out the alcohol.

Here’s what you need for the Midnight in Moscow

4 cl Vodka (neutral, 40 % vol.)

2 cl Blue Curaçao (orange liqueur, blue-coloured)

4 cl freshly squeezed grapefruit juice (pink or red, not from concentrate)

8–10 cl chilled Tonic Water (with a high quinine content for bitterness)

1 orange slice (thin, with peel, for garnish)

1 cocktail cherry (red, stemless, for garnish)

Key to success

The trick lies in the timing: only add the Tonic Water at the very end, when the guest can see the drink. The blue colour of the Curaçao will fade over time due to the acidity of the grapefruit – so serve it quickly. If you prefer a more intense flavour, you can lightly season the grapefruit juice with a pinch of salt before mixing. This subdues the bitterness and enhances the sweetness of the Curaçao. Ice cubes made from frozen Tonic Water (simply pour Tonic into ice cube trays) give the drink an extra quinine note without diluting it.

Variations

  • Midnight in Havana — Replace Vodka with 4 cl white Rum and add 1 cl lime juice. The acidity of the lime makes the drink fresher, the Rum gives it a tropical note. Garnish: lime slice and mint sprig.
  • Midnight Spritz — Replace Tonic Water with 6 cl Prosecco and add 2 cl soda water. The drink becomes lighter and more effervescent, though it loses some of the original bitterness. Garnish: orange zest instead of slice.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the drink turn greenish over time?

The blue colour of the Curaçao reacts with the acidity of the grapefruit and the quinine in the Tonic Water. This is normal and not a sign of poor quality. If you want to avoid this effect, mix the drink only shortly before serving.

Can I use orange juice instead of grapefruit juice?

Yes, but the drink will lose its characteristic bitterness. Orange juice makes it sweeter and milder. If you still want to try it, use 3 cl orange juice and 1 cl lime juice for freshness.

How strong is the drink really?

With 4 cl Vodka, the alcohol content is around 12–14 % vol. The Tonic Water slightly dilutes it, but the Vodka remains noticeable. If you prefer it weaker, reduce the Vodka to 3 cl and increase the Tonic Water to 12 cl.
