The Luisita is a light, refreshing long drink that stands out thanks to the combination of Blue Curaçao and homemade lemon water (Lemon Barley Water). Visually appealing with its blue hue, this drink balances sweetness, acidity, and a subtle grain note. Perfect for warm days or as an aperitif – simple but full of character.
Here’s what you need for the Luisita
2 cl Blue Curaçao (blue-coloured orange liqueur)
6 cl lemon water (Lemon Barley Water, see detail)
1 cl freshly squeezed lemon juice
12 cl Tonic Water (chilled)
Ice cubes
1 halved lemon or lime slice (for garnish)
Key points
The lemon water (Lemon Barley Water) is the secret to the Luisita – it adds a subtle grain note and a softer acidity than pure lemon juice. To make it, simmer 50 g pearl barley in 500 ml water for 20 minutes, strain, and mix with 100 ml lemon juice and 50 g sugar. Strain through a fine sieve and store chilled. The water keeps in the fridge for about a week. In a hurry? Mix 1 part lemon juice with 2 parts water and a pinch of sugar – the grain note will be missing, but the drink will still be refreshing.
Variations
- Luisita Spritz — Replace the Tonic Water with 6 cl Prosecco and 6 cl soda water. The drink becomes lighter and more effervescent, ideal for summer evenings.
- Green Luisita — Replace the Blue Curaçao with 2 cl Midori (melon liqueur). The colour changes to a fresh green, and the flavour becomes fruitier and less tart.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use lemonade instead of lemon water?
Lemonade is too sweet and overpowers the delicate flavours of the Blue Curaçao. A better option is a mix of lemon juice and water with a touch of sugar – or the homemade lemon water itself.
Why does my Luisita taste too bitter?
Tonic Water contains quinine-based bitter compounds. Use a milder brand or reduce the amount to 8–10 cl. Alternatively, add a little more lemon water to balance the bitterness.
Can I prepare the drink without alcohol?
Yes, replace the Blue Curaçao with 2 cl alcohol-free Blue Curaçao syrup or a blue food colouring mixed with a bit of lemon juice. The flavour will be similar, though the alcohol note will be absent.
