Long Boat – The Recipe Rezept

The Long Boat is a light, refreshing Highball that brings summery freshness with fresh mint and lime. Ginger Beer gives it a spicy-sweet depth, while the lime syrup ensures balanced acidity. Perfect for warm days or as a relaxed aperitif – simple, but with character. If you mix it, you should add the Ginger Beer at the very end so that the fizz doesn’t dissipate.

And this is what you’ll need for the Long Boat

2 cl lime syrup

15 cl Ginger Beer (cold)

1 fresh lime wedge

1 sprig of mint (plus 1 leaf for garnish)

Ice cubes

The key to success

The trick lies in the timing: only add the Ginger Beer at the very last moment, otherwise it will lose its fizz. If you want it even more intense, you can briefly rub the mint between your fingers before garnishing – this releases essential oils and enhances the aroma. Important: do not use crushed ice, otherwise the drink will become too watery. Fresh mint is a must; dried mint will taste like dust here.

Variations

  • Long Boat with Rum — mix 4 cl white Rum under the lime syrup before topping up with Ginger Beer. Gives the drink a light Caribbean note.
  • Spicy Long Boat — add a thin slice of fresh ginger or 2 dashes of ginger syrup to the glass before adding the ice. Pairs well with a more robust Ginger Beer.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Ginger Ale instead of Ginger Beer?

Yes, but the taste will be sweeter and less spicy. Ginger Beer has more bite and pairs better with the lime syrup. If you use Ginger Ale, reduce the syrup to 1.5 cl.

How long does lime syrup keep?

Homemade syrup (1:1 sugar and lime juice) will keep in the fridge for about a week. Store-bought syrup usually lasts longer – check the best-before date.

Why do you rub the lime over the rim of the glass?

This releases the oils from the peel, which mix with the drink and provide a fresh, citrusy aroma. Simply run the wedge briefly over the rim before adding it to the glass.
