Pumpkin Punch isn’t a dessert but a seasonal long drink that combines the sweetness of pumpkin with the depth of brown Rum. The purée isn’t cooked but used raw – this preserves the fresh pumpkin note. Maple syrup and lemon balance the flavour, while a pinch of cinnamon adds warmth. Perfect for cool evenings when you want something substantial in the glass, yet still light.
And here’s what you need for the Pumpkin Punch
4 cl brown Rum
8 cl pumpkin purée (fresh, raw, puréed)
2 cl maple syrup
2 cl lemon juice (freshly squeezed)
1 pinch cinnamon (for garnish)
Ice cubes
This is what matters
The pumpkin purée must be freshly puréed and raw – cooked purée makes the drink mushy and loses the vibrant pumpkin note. If you prefer it creamier, you can stir in 1 cl cream or coconut milk, but then the punch will be heavier. Important: The brown Rum should have at least 40 % vol., otherwise the spice gets lost in the pumpkin. If you don’t have fresh pumpkin, you can use jarred Hokkaido purée, but drain it first – otherwise the drink will become too watery.
Variations
- Pumpkin Chai Punch — Replace 2 cl maple syrup with 2 cl chai syrup and add 1 cl ginger juice. Garnish with a cinnamon stick.
- Smoky Pumpkin Punch — Add 1 cl smoky Mezcal and reduce the brown Rum to 3 cl. Garnish with a spritz of roasted pumpkin seed oil.
- Pumpkin Punch alcohol-free — Replace the brown Rum with 4 cl alcohol-free Rum or 3 cl apple juice and 1 cl vanilla syrup. Garnish with nutmeg instead of cinnamon.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use canned pumpkin purée instead of fresh pumpkin?
Yes, but only if it’s plain pumpkin purée without sugar or spices. Canned purée tends to be watery – drain it in a sieve beforehand or reduce the amount to 6 cl.
Why does my Pumpkin Punch taste bitter?
Either the pumpkin purée is too old or the lemon juice is too dominant. Use only freshly puréed pumpkin (Hokkaido or Butternut) and carefully measure the lemon juice – 2 cl should be enough. If necessary, balance it with a bit more maple syrup.
Can I serve the punch warm?
No – the raw pumpkin purée would curdle when heated. For a warm version, mix the punch without ice, heat it in a pot over low heat until it steams (do not boil!), then stretch with hot water or tea and serve with a cinnamon stick.
