The Jack Rose is a classic Prohibition-era Sour that combines Applejack — an American apple spirit — with lemon juice and grenadine. The drink’s balance of fruity sweetness and acidity defines its character. Its pink hue gave it its name, which also alludes to the spirit itself. If you don’t have Applejack on hand, you can substitute Calvados or another apple spirit — the aromas will remain similar.

Here’s what you’ll need for the Jack Rose

5 cl Applejack

2 cl lemon juice

1.5 cl grenadine

Key points

The grenadine makes all the difference here: ready-made syrup from the supermarket often contains only sugar and dye, whereas real pomegranate syrup adds depth and natural fruitiness that doesn’t overpower the apple spirit. When shaking, aim for ten seconds longer rather than too short — the drink needs chill and dilution to prevent the acidity from becoming too sharp. Applejack is usually more potent than Calvados, so don’t skimp on the grenadine. If you prefer a drier drink, reduce the grenadine to 1 cl and balance it with an extra splash of lemon juice.

Variations

  • Jack Rose with Calvados — Replace the Applejack with 5 cl Calvados for a slightly more elegant, less rustic result.
  • Laird’s Jack Rose — Use Bonded Applejack (50 % vol.) for greater structure and intensity.

Frequently asked questions

What is Applejack?

Applejack is an American apple spirit traditionally distilled from hard cider. Modern versions are often blends of apple distillate and neutral alcohol. Bonded Applejack is pure and full-bodied.

Can I make the Jack Rose with Bourbon?

No, as that would make it a different drink. The Jack Rose relies on apple notes — Bourbon brings vanilla and caramel, which don’t belong here. It works with Calvados or another apple spirit instead.

Why is the Jack Rose sometimes made with lime juice?

That’s a modern variation. Traditionally, lemon juice is used because it better supports the fruitiness of the grenadine. Lime makes the drink sharper and less rounded.
