Italian Summer Punch – the Recipe Rezept

A punch that tastes of sunshine and vacation: dry white wine meets citrus-fresh acidity and the aromatic kick of an Italian herbal liqueur. Basil adds an unexpected spice that sets this drink apart from classic sangria. Served in a punch bowl so the aromas can unfold as it’s poured – perfect for garden parties or an evening on the balcony. Not too sweet, not too tart, just a drink you’ll pour twice.

And here’s what you’ll need for the Italian Summer Punch

300 ml dry white wine (e.g. Pinot Grigio or Vermentino)

6 cl Italian herbal liqueur (e.g. with anise and citrus notes)

1 splash each of fresh lemon, lime and orange juice (freshly squeezed, approx. 5 ml per variety)

150 ml soda water (chilled, to be added last)

1 handful of ice cubes (large, approx. 3 cm edge length)

4–5 thin lemon and orange slices (with peel, for aroma)

3–4 sprigs fresh basil (plus extra for garnish)

What’s key here

The trick is in the basil: don’t chop it, use whole sprigs and let them mingle with the citrus notes in the punch bowl. The leaves release their aroma slowly without turning bitter. If you like, you can briefly flame the basil sprigs with a lighter before serving – this releases additional essential oils and gives the drink a smoky depth. Important: only heat the leaves briefly, don’t burn the stems. Alternatively, rub the sprigs between your palms to activate the aromas.

Variations

  • Alpine Summer Punch — Replace the Italian herbal liqueur with 4 cl gentian liqueur and add 2 cl elderflower syrup. Instead of basil, add 3 sprigs fresh mint and 2 thin cucumber slices to the punch bowl. Replace the soda water with 100 ml dry Prosecco – a more robust, alpine variation.
  • Sparkling Rosé Punch — Replace the white wine with 300 ml dry rosé and the herbal liqueur with 5 cl Aperol. Instead of basil, add 4 strawberry slices and 2 sprigs thyme to the punch bowl. Top up with 150 ml Prosecco instead of soda water – fruity and bubbly.

Frequently asked questions

Can I prepare the punch in advance?

Yes, but without the soda water and ice. Let the wine-herbal liqueur mixture with citrus and basil infuse in the punch bowl in the fridge for 2–3 hours. Only add the ice and soda water shortly before serving; otherwise the drink will become diluted and lose its fizz.

Which wine works best?

Dry, light white wines with little acidity such as Pinot Grigio, Vermentino or a Spanish Albariño. Wines with too much acidity (e.g. Sauvignon Blanc) will overpower the herbal notes. Avoid wines with residual sugar – they’ll make the punch cloying.

Can I leave out the herbal liqueur?

Technically yes, but then the typical Italian note will be missing. Replace it with 4 cl limoncello and 2 cl orange liqueur if you prefer something fruitier. Without liqueur, the punch will taste like simple sangria.
