Ginger Moscow Mule – alcohol-free – the recipe Rezept

Basisspirituose
Alkoholfreie Cocktails (Mocktails)

The Moscow Mule thrives on the crisp sharpness of the ginger and the freshness of the lime. Without alcohol, it becomes the perfect thirst quencher: fizzy, icy, with a touch of sweetness that doesn’t overpower the spice but carries it. Served in a copper mug or a sturdy tumbler – the metal conducts the cold better than glass, making every sip an experience. For a more intense ginger flavor, squeeze fresh root directly into the glass.

And here’s what you’ll need for the ginger Moscow Mule – alcohol-free

200 ml ginger beer (spicy, not too sweet)

Juice of 1 lime (approx. 2 cl)

1.5 cl sugar syrup (1:1 sugar to water)

1 thin slice of fresh ginger (approx. 2 g, optional)

Ice cubes (large, clear frozen)

Garnish: lime slice and mint sprig

Key points

Temperature is everything: the glass must be ice-cold before the ginger beer is added. Fill it with ice beforehand and leave it for 30 seconds, then drain the water. This keeps the drink fizzier for longer. And: ginger beer is not the same as ginger lemonade. Choose a variety with distinct spiciness – the sweetness comes from the sugar syrup and lime, not the beer. For an even more intense flavor, grate fresh ginger root (approx. 1 cm) with a microplane directly into the glass – but be careful, it can burn the throat if too much is used.

Variations

  • Ginger-Lime Fizz — Replace the ginger beer with 150 ml soda water and add 2 cl freshly pressed ginger juice (approx. 10 g grated ginger, strained through a sieve). Sweeten with 2 cl sugar syrup and garnish with a thin ginger slice. Less fizzy, but more direct in flavor.
  • Moscow Mule with Elderflower — Add 1 cl elderflower syrup to the sugar syrup. This adds a floral note that rounds off the spiciness of the ginger. Especially popular in spring.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use ready-made lime juice?

No. Ready-made juice often tastes bitter and lacks the fresh acidity the drink needs. Squeeze the lime fresh just before mixing – that’s the difference between a good and a great Moscow Mule.

Why does my ginger Moscow Mule taste flat?

Probably because the ice is too small or the glass isn’t cold enough. Large, clear ice cubes melt more slowly and don’t dilute the drink too quickly. And: ginger beer loses its fizz if it’s too warm – store it in the refrigerator.

Can I leave out the sugar syrup?

Yes, but then the drink will taste harsher. The syrup rounds off the spiciness of the ginger and balances the acidity of the lime. If you prefer it less sweet, reduce to 0.5 cl – but leaving it out entirely isn’t recommended.
