The Hot Whisky Toddy is a traditional hot drink classic originally considered a home remedy for colds. The combination of warm water, whisky, honey, and lemon warms you from the inside and blends the spicy sharpness of the whisky with the mild sweetness of the honey. Unlike many mulled wine variants, the Toddy remains clear and simple – an uncomplicated drink that can be prepared directly in the glass in just a few minutes.
And this is what you need for the Hot Whisky Toddy
5 cl Bourbon Whiskey or Blended Scotch Whisky
1 barspoon honey
2 cl fresh lemon juice
10 cl hot water
1 lemon slice
2 cloves
1 cinnamon stick
The key here
The honey must dissolve completely, otherwise it will stick to the bottom of the glass. I therefore first mix honey and lemon juice before adding the whisky – this makes the honey emulsify more easily. The water must not boil, otherwise the alcohol will evaporate too quickly and the drink will taste flat. 70 to 80 degrees is ideal. Some swear by Irish Whiskey because it is smoother, but I prefer the vanilla notes of Bourbon or the smoky depth of a mild Blended Scotch Whisky.
Variations
- Hot Rum Toddy — 5 cl dark rum instead of whisky, pairs well with dark honey.
- Apple Toddy — Replace hot water with hot apple juice, garnish with star anise.
- Ginger Toddy — Add 1 cl fresh ginger juice for more heat.
Frequently asked questions
Which whisky works best for a Hot Toddy?
Bourbon Whiskey brings vanilla and caramel, Blended Scotch Whisky offers a touch of smoke. Irish Whiskey is milder and rounder. Avoid expensive single malts – the heat mutes the delicate aromas.
Can I replace the honey with sugar?
Yes, but the drink loses depth. Honey brings its own aromas and blends better with the whisky. If so, use sugar syrup instead of granulated sugar as it dissolves more easily.
How hot should the water be?
Not boiling. 70 to 80 degrees is ideal – hot enough to warm, but the alcohol stays in the glass and does not evaporate.
