The Hot Gin Toddy is the gin variation of the classic Toddy – a hot, soothing drink that warms on cold evenings and provides comfort when a cold is setting in. Instead of whisky, gin forms the base here, combined with honey, lemon, and hot water. The juniper spirit brings its botanical notes, while honey and lemon ensure the balance between sweetness and acidity. An uncomplicated drink that is prepared directly in the glass and requires no bar equipment.
And this is what you need for the Hot Gin Toddy
5 cl Gin
1 tbsp Honey
2 cl Fresh lemon juice
10 cl Hot water
1 Lemon slice
1 Clove (optional)
What matters
The water should be hot but not boiling – otherwise the alcohol evaporates too quickly and the essential oils of the gin become too volatile. 70–80 °C is ideal. Stirring the honey beforehand with a little gin or lemon juice helps it distribute evenly in the hot water and prevents lumps. Those who like can lightly press the lemon slice beforehand to release more essential oils. Preheating the glass prevents temperature shock and keeps the drink warm longer.
Variations
- Hot Rum Toddy — With dark rum instead of gin – classic and more spicy in taste.
- Spiced Gin Toddy — With a cinnamon stick, star anise, and fresh ginger for more spice.
- Hot Whisky Toddy — The original variation with Scotch or Bourbon.
Frequently asked questions
Which gin works best?
A classic London Dry Gin works well, as its juniper notes also come through when heated. Too floral or citrus-heavy gins may lose their finesse in the heat.
Can I use a different honey?
Yes, any honey works. Acacia honey is mild and neutral, forest honey brings stronger, spicy notes. The important thing is that it dissolves well.
Does the Toddy really help with colds?
Not medically proven, but the warmth, steam, and honey can be soothing. The alcohol does not disinfect – that is a myth.
