Highlander – the recipe Rezept

The Highlander combines Blended Scotch Whisky with the honey-spiced Drambuie and fresh citrus. The balance of smoky whisky, sweet herbal note and tart freshness makes it a well-rounded drink that works both as an aperitif and a digestif. The recipe thrives on balance – too much Drambuie overpowers the whisky, too little leaves the drink harsh. A classic that gets even better with a small tweak: replace orange juice with freshly squeezed lemon juice to control the acidity more precisely.

And here’s what you need for the Highlander

5 cl Blended Scotch Whisky

2 cl Drambuie (whisky liqueur)

2 cl freshly squeezed lemon juice

2 cl freshly squeezed orange juice

1 orange slice (for garnish)

1 cocktail cherry (for garnish)

What matters most

The trick lies in the ice: use large, clear ice cubes for the shaker – they melt more slowly and dilute the drink less. When straining into the glass, make sure no ice from the shaker comes along, otherwise the drink will be watered down. If you prefer it even smokier, you can stir in a splash of Islay whisky (0.5 cl) before serving. The Drambuie should be at room temperature so that it blends better with the whisky – when cold, it becomes viscous and distributes unevenly.

Variations

  • Highlander Smash — Replace 2 cl lemon juice with 3 fresh mint leaves and 1 cl sugar syrup, lightly muddle in the shaker, then shake with ice. Garnish with a sprig of mint.
  • Highlander Fizz — After straining, top up with 6 cl chilled soda water and stir gently. Garnish with a lemon twist.

Frequently asked questions

Can I leave out the orange juice?

Yes, but then increase the lemon juice to 3 cl to balance the acidity. The drink will be harsher and less fruity, but the whisky and Drambuie notes will come through more strongly.

Which whisky works best?

A Blended Scotch Whisky with a slightly smoky note (e.g. with an Islay component) pairs perfectly with the Drambuie. Too mild whiskies get lost in the sweetness, too peaty ones overpower the herbal notes of the liqueur.

Why does my Highlander taste watery?

Probably because you shook for too long or used small ice. Large ice cubes and a short, vigorous shake (12–15 seconds) prevent over-dilution.
