Heavenly Days – the recipe Rezept

A cocktail that tastes like a sunny afternoon: hazelnut syrup brings creamy sweetness, lemon juice fresh acidity, and grenadine a floral depth. The mineral water makes it effervescent, the orange slice gives a slightly bitter finish. Perfect for days when you just want to switch off – without alcohol, but with plenty of flavour. The drink is quick to make but tastes like a little celebration.

And here’s what you need for the Heavenly Days

4 cl hazelnut syrup

4 cl lemon juice (freshly squeezed)

1 tsp grenadine (approx. 5 ml)

100 ml mineral water (cold, with carbonation)

crushed ice cubes (approx. 1 cup)

1 orange slice (for garnish)

Here’s the secret

The trick lies in the ice: crushed cubes chill faster and release less water than whole ones. If you prefer it even creamier, you can briefly warm the hazelnut syrup in a bain-marie – this helps release the aromas. It’s important to add the mineral water only to the glass, otherwise the drink loses its fizz. If you like, you can also drizzle the grenadine into the glass after the mineral water to create a beautiful colour gradient.

Variations

  • Heavenly Nights — Replace the hazelnut syrup with 4 cl almond syrup and add 2 cl orange juice. Finish with a dash of lemon bitters – this adds a slightly bitter note reminiscent of an aperitif.
  • Heavenly Fizz — Add 4 cl gin (London Dry) to the shaker and shake the mixture with ice. Then strain over crushed ice as in the original and top up with mineral water. Garnish: orange zest instead of a slice.

Frequently asked questions

Can I make the hazelnut syrup myself?

Yes. Boil 100 g hazelnuts (roasted and finely ground) with 200 ml water and 150 g sugar, simmer for 10 minutes and strain through a cloth. The syrup will keep in the fridge for about 2 weeks.

Why does my drink taste too sweet?

Probably the grenadine is too dominant. Reduce it to half a teaspoon or use a syrup with less sugar. Alternatively, add more lemon juice to balance out the sweetness.

Can I use tonic water instead of mineral water?

Yes, but the taste changes significantly. Tonic water is more bitter and less effervescent. If you try it, reduce the grenadine to half a teaspoon to maintain a harmonious balance.
