Green Monkey – the Recipe Rezept

The Green Monkey is a creamy mini getaway in a glass: sweet banana meets tart orange, Blue Curaçao brings the color and the cream makes it velvety. Originally a 90s party drink, today it works as a dessert cocktail or after-dinner drink. The physalis garnish isn’t just for decoration – it adds a surprisingly fresh acidity to the first sip, the detail that makes all the difference.

And this is what you need for the Green Monkey

3 cl Blue Curaçao (liqueur based on Triple Sec)

2 cl banana liqueur

5 cl freshly squeezed orange juice

2 cl cream (at least 30 % fat)

1 physalis (for garnish)

What matters here

The cream must be cold – preferably straight from the fridge. If it’s too warm, it will curdle in the shaker and the drink will turn watery instead of creamy. If you prefer it extra velvety, you can whip the cream briefly beforehand, but not too stiff, otherwise it won’t shake properly. Important: The orange juice should be freshly squeezed, otherwise the drink will taste flat. The acidity of the physalis isn’t a coincidence – it cuts through the sweetness and makes the next sip interesting again.

Variations

  • Green Monkey Twist — Replace the banana liqueur with 2 cl coconut liqueur and add 1 cl lime juice. The coconut note enhances the tropical character, while the lime balances the sweetness. Garnish: toasted coconut flakes on the cream.
  • Green Monkey Light — Reduce the Blue Curaçao to 2 cl and replace the cream with 2 cl coconut milk. Less alcohol, but still creamy – ideal for a longer evening.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use milk instead of cream?

No. Milk doesn’t have enough fat to achieve the desired creaminess. The drink would taste watery and the ingredients could separate. If no cream is available, coconut milk is a suitable alternative – it’s not quite as creamy, but fits the flavor.

Why does the cream sometimes curdle in the shaker?

This happens if the cream is too warm or the shaker contains too much ice. The cream should not be older than two days and should come straight from the fridge. If it still curdles, you can briefly hold the shaker under cold water before shaking – but only from the outside so that no water gets into the drink.

Can I prepare the drink without alcohol?

Yes. Replace the Blue Curaçao with 3 cl alcohol-free Blue Curaçao syrup (available in specialty stores) and the banana liqueur with 2 cl banana syrup. The flavor remains similar, but the drink becomes significantly sweeter – you may want to add a little lime juice to keep it balanced.
