The Golden Colada with Mango is a fruity variation of the classic Piña Colada, where ripe mango complements or partially replaces pineapple. White Rum meets creamy coconut cream and sweet mango chunks — blended with ice, this creates a velvety, tropical drink with a golden-yellow color. The cocktail tastes like a vacation in a glass and is especially popular in summer when you want to enhance the Piña Colada with a fruity note.

Here’s what you need for the Golden Colada with Mango

5 cl white Rum

8 cl pineapple juice

4 cl coconut cream

6 cl fresh mango chunks (approx. 80 g)

1 cl lime juice

1 cup Crushed Ice

What matters

The ripeness of the mango is crucial: an unripe fruit lacks sweetness and is difficult to blend, while an overripe one becomes fibrous. Varieties like Kent or Palmer, which are creamy and aromatic, work best. If you don’t have fresh mango on hand, you can use frozen mango chunks — they cool the drink further and allow you to reduce the amount of ice. Stir the coconut cream well before use, as it often separates in the can.

Variations

  • Mango Colada without pineapple — replace pineapple juice with an additional 8 cl mango purée or mango nectar for an even more intense mango flavor.
  • Golden Colada with passion fruit — add 2 cl passion fruit juice or the pulp of a passion fruit for a tangy note.
  • Spiced Golden Colada — replace white Rum with Spiced Rum and sprinkle a pinch of nutmeg over the finished drink.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use frozen mango?

Yes, frozen mango chunks work very well and make the drink even colder. You can then reduce the amount of Crushed Ice by about a third to prevent the drink from becoming watered down.

Which Rum works best?

A light white Rum from the Caribbean is ideal as it doesn’t overpower the fruity flavors. If you prefer a stronger taste, you can use gold Rum, but should then reduce the sweetness slightly.

Is coconut milk the same as coconut cream?

No. Coconut cream is much thicker and sweeter. Coconut milk makes the drink thinner and less creamy. For the Golden Colada, you should use coconut cream from a can.
