Mulled Wine Cocktail – the Recipe Rezept

Basisspirituose
Alpro Drinks

Mulled wine doesn’t have to steam: this cocktail brings the spices and sweetness of the wine into a glass you can hold without oven mitts. Aged Rum adds depth, lemon juice cuts the sweetness, and a pinch of nutmeg makes the difference between “like a Christmas market” and “like a bar.” Perfect for the first frost or the last sip before heading home.

And here’s what you need for the Mulled Wine Cocktail

150 ml mulled wine (dry, not too sweet)

30 ml aged Rum

1 cl lemon juice (freshly squeezed)

1 pinch freshly grated nutmeg

1 orange slice (to garnish)

1 cinnamon stick (to garnish)

The key to success

The trick is in the timing: if the mulled wine is too hot, the Rum will burn and taste harsh. 65 °C is ideal – you can feel it on your lips, but it no longer steams. For precision, use a kitchen thermometer. Add the nutmeg only at the end, or it will overpower. Freshly grated, it tastes more intense than pre-purchased powder – keep a small grater behind any bar that makes winter cocktails.

Variations

  • Feuerzangenbowle Cocktail — Replace the Rum with 20 ml rum soaked over sugar (soak 1 sugar cube with 2 cl Rum, ignite and let it caramelize). Extinguish the burning sugar over the glass and top up with mulled wine. Prepare only under a fume hood or outdoors – guaranteed sparks.
  • Mulled Wine Sour — For a tangier version: shake 150 ml mulled wine with 30 ml aged Rum, 2 cl lemon juice, and 1 cl sugar syrup in a shaker with ice, then strain into a chilled glass. Garnish with a lemon twist. Tastes less like a Christmas market, more like a bar – perfect for guests who prefer it less sweet.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use white Rum instead?

Yes, but the cocktail loses depth. Aged Rum brings vanilla and caramel notes that pair better with the spices. White Rum tastes fresher but thinner – if you use it, reduce the lemon juice to 0.5 cl to balance the flavors.

Does the mulled wine have to be homemade?

No, but use a high-quality store-bought mulled wine with recognizable spices (cinnamon, cloves, orange). Cheap varieties often taste like flavored sugar water – in that case, it’s better to make your own: heat 1 bottle of dry red wine with 1 cinnamon stick, 3 cloves, 1 orange slice, and 2 tbsp honey at 70 °C for 10 minutes, then strain.

Can I serve the cocktail cold?

Theoretically yes, but then it’s no longer a Mulled Wine Cocktail. The warmth opens the aromas of the spices and softens the Rum. If you prefer it cold, try the Mulled Wine Sour instead (see Variations).
