Gin Fizz – the Recipe Rezept

Basisspirituose
Alpro Drinks

The Gin Fizz is a timeless cocktail renowned for its lightness and freshness. With London Dry Gin as the base, complemented by lemon juice and cane sugar syrup, it creates a balanced aroma that gains a lively texture from the effervescent soda water. Perfect for warm days or as an elegant aperitif – simple yet prepared with finesse.

Here’s what you need for the Gin Fizz – the recipe

5 cl London Dry Gin

2.5 cl fresh lemon juice

1.5 cl cane sugar syrup

Soda water (to top up)

Garnish: 1 slice of lemon and 1 cocktail cherry

Key Points

The trick lies in the timing: add the soda water only after shaking and straining to prevent the carbonation from dissipating. Use freshly squeezed lemon juice – bottled juice makes the drink flat and unbalanced. The cane sugar syrup should not be too thick, otherwise it won’t dissolve well in the shaker. A little bartender’s trick: rinse the shaker with cold water before shaking to prevent the ice from melting too quickly and diluting the drink.

Variations

  • Silver Fizz — Like the Gin Fizz, but with an additional egg white added to the ingredients before shaking. The egg white gives the drink a creamy texture and a lovely foam head. Important: shake the egg white dry (without ice) until frothy first, then add ice and shake as usual.
  • Royal Fizz — This version uses a whole egg (yolk and white), which gives the cocktail a richer, almost velvety consistency. The egg is also shaken dry first before adding ice and the remaining ingredients.
  • Sloe Gin Fizz — Replace 2 cl of the London Dry Gin with Sloe Gin. The Sloe Gin adds a fruity sweetness and a slightly tart note, taking the Gin Fizz in a new direction. Reduce the cane sugar syrup slightly, as the Sloe Gin is already sweet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use regular simple syrup instead of cane sugar syrup?

Yes, but cane sugar syrup has a slightly caramelised note that adds depth to the Gin Fizz. If you use regular simple syrup, make sure it isn’t too sweet – the drink should remain balanced, not overly sugary.

Why does my Gin Fizz sometimes taste watery?

This usually happens when the ice in the shaker melts too quickly or the soda water mixes too much with the gin. Use well-chilled ice and don’t shake for too long. Add the soda water in the glass only and stir gently to preserve the carbonation.

Can I make a Gin Fizz without soda water?

Technically yes, but then it’s not a Fizz anymore – the name comes from the effervescent soda water. Without carbonation, the drink becomes more like a Gin Sour, which may be delicious but isn’t the same thing.
