The Frozen Limoncello Spritz transforms the classic Spritz into a frothy, semi-frozen delight. Limoncello – the citrusy liqueur made from lemon peels and neutral alcohol – meets bubbly Prosecco and fresh lemon juice. The result is a drink that feels like granita but with the lightness of an aperitif: creamy, refreshing, and with a hint of sweetness. Perfect for the patio when the sun is blazing and ice cubes melt too quickly. This Spritz doesn’t just stay cold—it stays that way without losing its effervescence.

Here’s what you’ll need for the Frozen Limoncello Spritz

6 cl Limoncello (lemon liqueur made from neutral alcohol and lemon peels)

8 cl Prosecco (dry, well-chilled)

2 cl freshly squeezed lemon juice

1 cl sugar syrup (1:1 sugar-water)

1 handful crushed ice (approx. 100 g, fine but not powdered)

Garnish: 1 lemon slice or twist

The key to success

The trick lies in timing: only fold in the Prosecco **in the last 30 seconds**, otherwise it loses its fizz and the drink turns flat. If you don’t have a blender, you can pour the crushed ice into the glass with the Limoncello and lemon, briefly mash with a spoon, then top with Prosecco—this makes the drink less creamy but still refreshing. Important: chill the glass in the freezer **for 5 minutes** beforehand so the drink doesn’t melt immediately. For an extra-elegant touch, briefly freeze the lemon slice for garnish—it lasts longer and looks like a mini iceberg.

Variations

  • Frozen Aperol Spritz Granita — Swap the Limoncello for 6 cl Aperol and reduce the sugar syrup to 0.5 cl. The mix becomes more bitter and less sweet, but just as refreshing. Garnish: orange slice instead of lemon.
  • Frozen Limoncello Spritz with Basil — Add 3 fresh basil leaves when blending for a subtle peppery note. Garnish: basil leaf and lemon zest.
  • Non-alcoholic version — Replace the Limoncello with 6 cl non-alcoholic lemon liqueur and the Prosecco with 8 cl non-alcoholic sparkling wine. The flavor remains similar, just without the sharpness of alcohol.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use sparkling wine instead of Prosecco?

Yes, but choose a dry sparkling wine with fine effervescence. Sweet sparkling wines make the drink too sugary. Important: always chill well, otherwise the ice melts too quickly.

How long can the mix be stored in the freezer?

The Limoncello-ice mixture can be kept in the freezer for **up to 2 hours**. Before serving, briefly loosen with a fork and then pour the Prosecco over it. After more than 2 hours, it becomes too hard and loses its creamy texture.

Why does my drink turn out too watery?

Either the crushed ice was too coarse (it melts faster) or the Prosecco wasn’t cold enough. Use **fine but not powdered ice** and chill all ingredients in the fridge beforehand. The blender should only run briefly—overmixing warms the mixture.

Can I skip the sugar syrup?

Yes, but the drink will be very sour. Limoncello is already sweet, but the lemon juice needs some balance. To make it less sweet, reduce the syrup to 0.5 cl.
